Becky Scott had a blast at the midway that was available for the youngsters this weekend as part of the entertainment at the Blyth Rutabaga Festival. Crowds were large and the weather co-operated. Many turn up for Rutabaga Fest. The co-ordinator of the Blyth Rutabaga Festival, Bruce Papple, was very pleased with the results of this weekend's activities. He was happy with the turnout: he met people from as far away as Toronto, Kitchener, and Guelph who had come out to see the festiv ities. Queen St. was very crowded for the parade on Saturday. "It was the best year yet for weainer," Mr. Papple concludes. He admits Saturday was a little on the cool side, but Sunday was fan tastic. Mr. Papple would especially like to thank the Metro Toronto Winged Wheels. The crowds were thrilled by the precision riding skills of the Winged Wheels in a terrific show given on Queen St. after the parade on Saturday. Spectators looked on from rooftops, bleachers, and side walks. Afterwards the people were given the chance to ask the riders questions and look over the beauti ful motorcycles. The montage was a parting gift for Ms Gardner who left last week to become general manager of a theatre in Ottawa. Blyth roasts Jane Nearly 100 people turned up at the Blyth and District Community Centre Wednesday night to roast Jane Gardner as she left her posi tion as Communications Director of the Blyth Festival. People from the theatre commu nity and the community in general took part in the salute to a person who has contributed hugely to all areas of the community in her five seasons at the Festival. She was a driving force in the formation of the Blyth Rutabaga Festival and remained in town long enough to enjoy the third annual event before leaving for her new position as gen eral manager of a theatre in Ottawa. Among those honouring Ms Gardner were Blyth Reeve Dave Lee who talked about her volunteer work to help promote the village Brussels gears up for FunFest Well, it's almost time for a festi val of fun in Brussels again as the countdown for the annual FunFest begins. Organizer Doug McArter says plans for the three day event, to be held this weekend, appear to be moving ahead smoothly, with many of the old tried and true activities returning and some new ones added. The Optimist Club this year has planned a road hockey tournament geared to youngsters in the 10 - 14 age bracket. Though some teams have signed up, there is still lots more needed for a good, healthy competition, said organizer George Langlois. Pre-regislration is a must, so the games can be scheduled, so he is asking anyone interested to get in touch with him by noon this Friday. Teams are to be made up of four players. All you need to play is a hockey stick. The Citizen, for the first time has sponsored a FunCar derby to be held on Saturday at James St. one block north of the arena. Cindy Fisher presented a gift on behalf of the Huron County Plan ning and Development office for Ms Gardner's tireless efforts in pro motion of Huron County. Many representatives of the arts community in Blyth and Huron County were present and messages were also received from the Strat ford Festival and from Theatre Ontario for Ms Gardner's efforts on behalf of the Association of Sum mer Theatres Round Ontario (ASTRO). The Blyth Festival Board of Directors presented her with a montage of the posters from sum mer seasons and tourism produc tions she had overseen. Staff at the Festival presented her with a colour caricature of herself. Races will be run by boys and girls nine and under, 10-12, and 13- 15. This year’s FunFest parade will be held on Friday evening to kick off the fesitivties. Mr. McArter said the change was precipitated in part by the East Wawanosh homecom ing this weekend, but also because they thought it might be worth a try. The Saturday night dance, with entertainment by "Eddie and the Edsels" is a 50's, 60's dance and people are encouraged to attend in appropriate costume, said Mr. McArter. Another first time event this year, is the gospel concert on Sunday at 6:30, sponsored by the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. Music will be provided by "The Proverbs", one of Canada's premier gospel groups. Of course, on Sunday, there will be the popular river events, includ ing the log rolling, bathtub race and duck race. As well, the Brussels Bulls are hosting a weekend long slo-pitch tournament. Members of the host ing Junior "C" team are scheduled to play on Saturday morning.
