He com pleted the six kilometer course in his wheelchair from the Square to St. Christopher's Beach, out the dock and back up the hill in less than two hours. Mr. McLachlan had several reasons for doing the wheel-a-thon. He and his wife, Sandra, have supported the hospital since two of their six children were patients there. Also, as Co-Chairperson of DIAMONDS, he wants to make people with physical challenges more visible. “We (people with physical challenges) want to let people know that we’re here, that we can do varying things, and if given the opportunity, we can take an active part in Huron County”, Mr. McLachlan said. On May 31, along with DIAMONDS members Norinne Brindley, Don Forest and Ron Airdrie, Mr. McLachlan presented the cheque on behalf of the DIAMONDS to Children's Hospital on the telethon on CFPL-TV London. A delegation of parents repre senting Blyth Soccer League approached Blyth council at its June 10 meeting, to request sup port. Hillie Blok, Jeanette Harris and Herb Van Amersfoort, told council that the 35 families and 72 children involved in the sports program have been working towards getting a soccer field in the village. This 200' by 400' playing field is the only requirement of the sport. Mrs. Blok noted the lack of other facilities for children in the area, saying the only one available in summer is baseball. The problem is that not all children want to play baseball. Also, the school yard where the soccer games are presently being played is too small. It is uneven and close to the road as well, making it dangerous. Councillor Steve Sparling said that while he could appreciate the view that there is a lack of facilities for youngsters, the recreation bud get has been "nickeled and dimed". "We can't be made to feel bad support because we don't have the money." Councillor Sparling told them that if property .were to become available somehow council would assist them with any help they needed. "The reality is, however, that unless a charitable person with two acres of land to donate comes forward, the village can't afford to buy it." He added that council rec ognizes the fundraising efforts of the children, but until there are def inite plans there is little else council can do. "Our hands are tied really tight." Hospital Aux, meets The theme for the June meeting and pot luck luncheon of the Clinton Public Hospital Ladies Auxiliary was “Wear a Hat”, and members of the CPH Auxiliary were there in hats varying from their Sunday finest to favourite sportswear and make-it-yourself headgear. Donna Woods hosted the luncheon meeting, and the beautiful back yard and spring flowers added greatly to the enjoyment of everyone. A hearty thanks was extended to Sharon Veitch and her committee for the successful Teen Volunteers ceremony on May 31, at which time the volunteers were awarded certificates, caps and cap bands for the work they have done at the hospital throughout the past year. The social committee served a delicious lunch of chocolate-dipped strawberries, cookies and squares on a beautifully set table. The successful tag day held on May 15 raised $2,427.25. Convenor Bernice Jewson thanked the helpers, and a hearty thankyou was extended to Bernice for her work in organizing the tag day. Reta Kelland reported on the board news, and informed the meeting that Dr. Steed is the new Chief of Staff. Members are needed to staff the Gift Shop and for portering at the hospital during the summer months as many of the volunteers are away during the summer, making it more difficult to provide these services. Patti Munnings reported that the Support Care Service she has been working on is now in the home stretch, and expected to start July 1. The membership of the auxiliary is now 49 paid up members. Members learned of the HELPP (Hospital Equipment Lottery Project for People) program. This is a fundraising method being used in a number of hospitals. Tickets are sold at the hospital or an alternate in town, and the tickets are a ‘scratch and win’ type of lottery printed with hospital symbols. Members are asked to consider this program. McKillop relocates hydro line McKillop Township council, dur ing their June 2 meeting, authorized Ontario Hydro to proceed with the relocation of a hydro line. The relocation of the hydro line on concession road 13/14, lots 11 to 20 will cost an estimated $1,451.49 for the township's por tion of the cost. Council objected to the closing of the Walton Branch Library as there is no direct tax savings to McKillop Township. Objections have also been received from ratepayers and the Walton Women's Institute. Cindy Maloney was hired as gravel checker for road reconstruc tion. W.E. Kelley and Associates Ltd. were appointed to prepare a report for repairs to the Barron municipal drain.
