ramp's lovelorn tale of “Miss
World of Beef’, the horseback vet,
he bullrider, and the homesteaders
- all Western heroes. “My first visit
o Pincher Creek Ranch in the
oothills of Southern Alberta was a
evelation,” says playwright Vai
irandt Jenkins. “I was a city girl -
..pent my early years in a ballet
studio and the last twenty years
immersed in a busy advertising
career. Then I spent three days with
Joy and Alan Young and their
honest-to-gosh working cowboys.
Suddenly I realized somebody had
to “get it all down” ... soon! The
Puff 'n' Blow Boys is not just about
Alberta. It's about knowing and
loving your home so passionately
you want to save it. Alan Young
died as I was writing the play. My
mother died as we entered
rehearsal. My father was 85 when
the production opened. Oh, how
breathlessly close I came to letting
all those stories slip away ...
forgotten.”
Composer Michael Taylor
weaves music into the western
legends and stories. Warren Carrie
has designed sets and costumes that
transport you to the foothills of the
Rockies with lighting design by
Lesley Wilkinson. The hit of the
1989 Edmonton Fringe Festival,
The Puff ‘n’ Blow Boys is
sponsored by John Labatt Limited
with performances at Blyth until
August 29.
