NOH 1E0 519-371-4142 THE EDITOR, As a secular humanist, I found Rev. Cameron McMillan's column (May 13, Christian Church needs all kinds of leaders, says Rev.) offensive to the human intellect and sensibilities. Why would anyone want to follow or put their faith and belief in someone named Jesus, who if indeed did ever exist, did commit suicide by every sense and definition of the word? Anyone who deliberately causes one's death does commit suicide. This person, it seems, did everything short of rBRUSSELsl handling the nails to bring about his death. If Peter and Paul were two great leaders in establishing the church, could we not include Jimmy Jones, who sent 900 men, women, and children to their deaths in Guyana, as another great leader. Jones also had God and Jesus on his side to justify his actions. Peter actually led thousands to their deaths in Rome 2,000 years ago with the promise of an afterlife spent walking on streets of gold. Archaeology is just beginning to find that Christians weren't thrown to the lions, as we have been lead to believe, they jumped. It was only the church, with its great wisdom, in an endeavor to stem off a tide of mass suicide, changed its teachings to say this mythical person had died for their sins, if there was really any sin to begin with and these people need no longer take their own lives. It is no wonder, that Christianity develops a negative self-image when from birth on, they are treated as if they are basically wicked, having been bom in a state of original sin, and filled with evil to the point where Jesus was pressured to make the ultimate sacrifice to save them from the consequences of that sinfulness. (It is safe to assume some just may also behave in line with this image and message.) These theological snake oil salesmen, both then and now have a veiy low or no self-esteem. They have no faith in themselves or in their fellow human beings, but rather total blind faith in some mythical HE, SHE, or IT, a suicidal individual whom they can not prove really did or does exist. Would I become a supporter of Jesus? I think not. It goes beyond all human rationale. Peter and Paul's great leadership qualities in guiding people and the develop ment of the church are question able. D.
