Friendship Club meets Well-deserved The Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Bd. recently honoured the work of the BMG Catering Group with the presentation of a plaque. The group, which formed with the express purpose of raising money to help keep the arena going have donated close to $100,000 since the mid- 80's. Rec. Bd. honours catering group The Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Board recently hon­ oured the BMG Catering Group for their generous volunteer contribu­ tions to the arena. The group which began about 15 years ago with the express purpose of raising funds for the arena has, since 1984, donated $90,500. The money is primarily used to cover the cost of the annual recreation insurance which runs approximate­ ly $8,000 per year, according to Rec. Treasurer Rhonda Fischer. Any excess money is used to offset annual operating costs. Bessie Johnston, took over the convening of the group in 1979. The one-time Brussels Citizen of the Year says she estimates there UCW donates to Lions The United Church of Brussels met for a general meeting and the mother's pot luck supper out 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6. Call to worship was given by Barbara McCutcheon who read a poem, “What is a Mother”. The hymn “When Mothers of Salem” was sung. Barbara welcomed guest speaker Rev. Cam McMillan whose topic was “Mother”. Rev. McMillan discussed the relation­ ship between mothers and daughters, bond between them, and similarities. Ida Evans thanked Rev. McMillan then gave the scripture. Betty Campbell accompanied the three generations - Janice and Joyce Jacklin and Gertie Kellington as they sang “Mother”. The hymn “Little Children Come Unto Me” was sung and then the meeting was turned over the President Gertie Kellington. Joyce Jacklin gave the treasurer's report, and the secretary's report was given by Joan Bernard. Joan and Gertie reported on the London Conference held in Chatham. Jeannette Boynton and Betty Graber made a fundraising calendar for the month of May. May 12 is the birthday party at Braemar Nursing Home in Wingham. The U.C.W. will be looking after it. The U.C.W. decided to pay for the lunch after the intermediate choir picnic in June. Ida and Gertie gave a report on the April event held in the Main Street Church in Mitchell. Over 350 ladies attended. A motion was made to give a donation to Lions Club. Barbara McMillan gave a note of thanks to the U.C.W. for baby crib are some 80 volunteers with the group now, adding that they can always use the addition of new, young members as they are con­ stantly in demand. From Nov. 9 to Dec. 7 alone the ladies fed 1600 people. Each December for the past several years now, over about 450 people enjoy the efforts of the BMG Catering Group at the annual Gay-Lea banquet in Brussels. Rec. Chairman Dale Newman presented the group with a plaque recently to thank them for their work and praise them for their tire­ less dedication. "This arena could­ n't get by without the help we get from the Catering Group and this is just a small way to let you know how much we appreciate you," he said. and baby clothing. Legion installs executive BY SANDRA JOSLING Branch 218 Brussels held their installation of Officers Ceremonies on Friday, May 22. The following members were installed to the executive: President, Allan Nichol, 1st Vice, Eric Ross; 2nd Vice, Rob Burkholder; Secretary, Glenn Bridge; Treasurer, Margaret Bennet; Sergeant at Arms, John Grobbo; Padre Rev. Paul Acton; Service Officer, Ted Elliott and executive committee, Murray Lowe, Debbie Trollope, Cecil Moore, Kathy Burkholder. The Branch 218 Ladies' Auxiliary were also installed at this time. They are: President, Helen Dobson, 1st Vice, Jayne Ross; 2nd Vice, Martha Logan; Treasurer, Barb Knight; Secretary, Barb Graber; Sergeant at Arms, Mabel Willis; Standard Bearer, Karen Parker; Sports Officer, Kay Duncan and Past President, Jean Little. Initiation of the new members was done by the Zone installing team. New members to the Branch are Margo Richardson, Murray Pipe, Lori Pipe, Gary Pipe, Catherine Haycock, and Rick McDonald. A social time followed the ceremonies. On Saturday, June 6 there will be a penny sale at the Brussels Legion Hall from 1 - 4 p.m. sponsored by the Branch 218 Ladies' Auxiliary. The work done by the group is very much in evidence when one looks at the arena budget. Though the total operating revenue is bud­ geted for $222,035.89, expendi­ tures are expected to be $221,872 for a surplus at the end of the year of $163.89. The usual monthly meeting of the Friendship Club met in the Legion Lounge on Wednesday, May 20 at 2 p.m. “O Canada” was sung, then President Gerald Exel led in prayer. The secretary and treasurer's report were read and adopted. Gerald Exel gave a fitting tribute to the memory of a long and valued member - the late Effie Hendrichs and two minutes' silence was held in her memory. The next meeting will beheld at the Legion on Wednesday, June 17 at 1 p.m. to be preceded by a pot luck lunch.
