JOIN THE RACE TO WIN PRIZES IN THE CITIZEN'S RUTABUGGY AND FUNCAR CONTEST „_ „„ at the Blyth Rutabaga Festival and Brussels FunFest Build this car or a car of your own design and enter the race Actually, there is no engine in this easy-to-build downhill race car. But it’s just as fun, nonetheless. The fun for you parents is in helping your children build it. . .and in watching them develop new confidence and woodworking skills. And for kids, what’s more fun than building something, especially something they can ride? This project is easy and economical to build. All you need are 1-1/2 sheets of APA trademarked structural wood panels, a little framing lumber, some hardware, and paint or stain. So round up your would-be race car drivers, put their latent do it-yourself skills to work, and get set to have some real fun. Safety First This project is designed to afford parents and children the fun of building something together. Children should be supervised during both the construction process and operation of the completed race car. The race car should not be operated on public streets or roadways, on hills, or in areas without sufficient room to stop and maneuver. Safety helmets should be worn during operation. Recommended Plywood: APA trademarked A-C Exterior, APA trademarked Medium Density Overlay (MDO), or APA trademarked nonveneer structural wood panels, such as waferboard or oriented strand board. Nail and glue racer front, back and seat to framing. Do not nail hood in place until steering assembly is installed. Construct steering assembly, using PVC pipe as shown in diagram. Install the dash and lower brace, connecting the PVC steering assembly. Run the PVC steering column through the 1-3/8 in. hole in the center of the dash. Connect steering rod with the eye bolts on the bottom of the PVC steering column. Bend the rod slightly to match wheel hinge locations on outer frame. Hinges may need to be bent out slightly. Install the wheels - place 8 in. wheels in the front, and 10 in. wheels in the back. Screw brake support to underside of racer. Glue and nail the hood to the racer front and sides. Fill and sand edges and nail holes. Paint and decorate as desired. Install brake cable. WARNING} Downhill race cars can provide hours of fun, but they must be operated safely.
