Spring busy for Melville congregation
Lots of people were involved and
busy at Melville in April and May.
Worshippers were greeted in April
by Ron and Trish Clarkson and
family. Barry and Sharon Bondi
and family, Murray and Betty
Cardiff and Ross and Anna
Cunningham. Elders assisting for
the month were Gerald Gibson and
Wilfred Shortreed. Bill Shortreed
acted as head usher.
At the end of April, Melville
received the resignation of
longtime caretakers Bill and Gertie
Kellington. The church thanks
them for their years of faithful
service. The Board has appointed
new caretakers, Betty and Harvey
Shaw. Melville is working on
putting together a new photo
directory, to help newcomers know
who all the members of the church
family are. Many photos of
individuals and church groups have
been taken and it is hoped this
directory will be ready in
September. The well-organized co
ordinators of this project have
been: Lynn Armstrong, Jayne Ross
and Brenda Wheeler.
Also beginning in May is the
now annual church slo-pitch
league. This year three teams will
participate, (Presbyterian, Menno-
nite and United Brussels/ Walton).
Games begin on Friday, May 22 at
Walton, 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
games and continue until July 24.
May 3 brought Melville an
opportunity to celebrate Earth Day
for the second year in a row. A
service borrowed from the ‘World
Day of Prayer’ was used to
heighten awareness of being
stewards of creation. Last year trees
were planted around the church.
This year shrubs were planted.
Special shrubs were given in
memory of Vera Hastings, Jim and
Ada Armstrong, Isabel Adams and
members of the Wilson family.
Other shrubs were donated by Ron
and Trish Clarkson, Sean and
Alisson Purcell, Neil and Joyce
Schade and Carolyn McAvoy.
May 10 was a special day at
Melville. Mother's Day was
celebrated with the sacrament of
infant baptism and a special
presentation by the church school.
Baptized were: Brianne Helen
Wheeler (daughter of Brenda and
Gerry); Paige Breanne Keffer
(daughter of Murray and Peggy);
Cole Gregory McLean (son of Pam
and Keith) and Cody Jonathan
Jesse Christian Subject (son of Bev
