THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29,1992 Young engineers Students at Brussels Public School created some unique creations at the first Invention Convention. The school­ wide event stressed thinking and problem solving by creating part of science. It gave students the opportunity to challenge existing ideas. Nicole Foxton and Michael Illman put the finishing touches on their newspaper tower. Grade 8's discuss careers 4H members learn first aid Meeting one and two of the Brus­ sels II 4-H club was held on April 20 and was lead by Wilma Ram- meloo and Mary Sanders. President, Laura Douma; Vice President, Michael Sanders; Trea­ surer, Heather Douma, Secretary, Andrea Rammeloo; Press Reporter, Melissa Rammeloo; and members Becky Buchanan, Jen­ nifer La Rose, Lindsay Johnston, David Brand and Brian Sanders answered the roll call. Lisa Stamper was absent. The club discussed the proper way to dress and things to put in your backpack when going on a hiking trip. Members had fun mak­ ing the snack, Trail Mix, and sam­ pling it and other trail snacks brought to the meeting. Guest speaker Doug Sholdice of Brussels gave an interesting demonstration about First Aid. Members tried mouth to mouth resuscitation on “Annie” the dummy, put splints and slings on each other, and examined a first aid kit. The next meeting will be held at the Wawanosh Nature Centre on April 27. The meeting closed with the 4H motto “Learn to do by Doing”. BY BRENT PEPPER AND MIKE DAUPHIN / The grade eight class visited the Career Fair at Wingham Public School on Wednesday, April 15. The time was well spent and every­ one enjoyed talking to representa­ tives from the different careers. The grade eight class will be starting their career shadowing from now until the end of the school year. They have begun to write letters to the persons they will be shadowing. They would like to thank the community for their par­ ticipation in this experience. The annual Jump Rope for Heart Skip-a-thon was held on Thursday, April 16 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. The teams were made up of Kindergartens to grade eights. The total amount of money raised was approximately $2,000. A special thanks to Madame Lindsay for organizing this event and making it a great day for everyone. In sports students have just start­ ed dodgeball season. There are four junior teams. They consist of the WMS meets The Easter meeting of Melville W.M.S. was held at the home of President Helen Elliott, who opened the meeting with “He is not a God of the dead but of the living for all live unto him” and prayer. The Spring Rally is to be in Teeswater, May 4. The Easter pro­ gramme was taken from the Glad Tidings with hymns, readings and prayers taken by Leona Armstrong, Marguerite Krauter, Helen Elliott, Isobel Gibson and Ruby Steiss. The collection was taken by Marguerite Krauter and dedicated by Helen Elliott. Marguerite read a letter from a cousin who is a missionary in Dur­ ban, South Africa. The meeting closed with the Miz­ pah Benediction. A lovely lunch was served by the hostess assisted by Isobel Gibson and a social time enjoyed. The four intermediate teams are the Tarantulas , the Black Widows, the Scorpions and the Cobras. On Wednesday, April 15, the grade six, seven and eight classes started to prepare for the Spring Concert to be held on May 7 at Brussels Public School. Everyone is welcome to attend. ‘ The Brussels Public School held their first Invention Convention on Thursday, April 23. The students were put into groups of five. Each group was given a task to do and the material to make it with. They had from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to fin­ ish their inventions. All of the completed work was displayed to the public from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the school auditorium. Many parents came out with their families to take a look at what the creative students at Brussels Public made. BANQUETS AND PRIVATE PARTIES WELCOME L7CW hears Easter poem The April meeting of U.C.W. of the United Church was held in the Church Parlour with 14 ladies pre­ sent. An Easter poem was read by President Gertie Kellington. All reports were given. The celebration marking 30 years of U.C.W. will be May 24. Guest speaker is Ian Hulley from Clinton Rebekahs meet The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge was held on Tuesday, April 14 with Noble Grand Leola Hood presiding. The members welcomed back the “Florida snow birds”. Leola Hood reported booking the library for May 8-9 for the annual Variety Fair. Plans were finalized for members to go to Clinton on April 20 to meet the Assembly Warden Shirley Hallsal. Also, plans were finalized for the Lodge members to go to Exeter on April 22 at which time the Initiatory Degree will be con­ ferred on two candidates from Brussels. The District meeting is to be held in Clinton on April 15. Jean Bridge and Janet McCutcheon will act as representatives at this meeting. All Past Noble Grands are invited to this meeting. One carload of mem­ bers will attend the meeting of Perth Star Lodge on April 23. The next regular meeting is April 28. Calendar Project for the month of May. The Stewards and U.C.W. are going to serve beef on a bun and dessert during the FunFest week­ end. Offering was received followed by the Benediction. Cathy Workman took over for the worship portion of the meeting. The hymn “Ride on, Ride On In Majesty” was sung. Scripture was taken from Mathew, No. 4. A video tape of Palm branches for Jesus Christ was shown, followed by prayer and discussion. “Hosanna Loud Hosanna” was sung. People Dave and Janet McCutcheon held a surprise 80th birthday party for Dave's father Jack, at their home. Those attending the dinner were his wife Margaret, Jack's sister Ruby and husband Walter Gould- ing, London, their sons Robert of Ingersoll, and Terry of Toronto, Jack's brother Dave and wife Pearl McCutcheon of Woodstock, Ned and Kay Rutledge, Lou and Mae Ebel, Brussels, grandchildren Andrew, Karen and Dave Smith, and Jackie Glanville also attended.
