Brussels women prepare for ’Dance for Heart’ Five years ago fitness instructors Druscilla Leitch of Seaforth and Maxine Houston, RR2, Brussels organized the first "Dance for Heart", a fitness activity to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Held the last week in May in Seaforth, in conjunction with Fit ness Week, this year's theme is "Puttin' on the Ritz"- doing the best for your heart, while at the same time discovering that fitness is fun. The event has been made possi ble the past few years through the generous support of merchants, who donate prizes and the Seaforth Recreation Board, for free use of the arena. * /is Step in time Fitness instructor Maxine Houston, foreground, and this group of Brussels ladies show how much fun exercise can be as they kick up their feet during a lively aerobics class in Brussels. This routine is similar to the ones planned for the annual "Dance For Heart", which will be held in Seaforth on Wednesday, Mary 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. Ethel woman fined and loses license for im paired driving An Ethel-area woman was fined $750 or 35 days in jail, and had her license suspended for 12 months after pleading guilty to an impaired driving charge in provincial court on April 15. Crown attorney Chris Nelligan told Judge R.G.E. Hunter that Bar bara Marshall, 54, of RR1, Ethel, was charged following an incident at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Feb. 6. Mr. Nelligan said that Ms Mar shall was at the arena complaining of chest pains, and refusing hospital treatment. The police were called at 6:41 p.m., Mr. Nelligan said, and when the constable arrived he was direct ed to Ms Marshall by a group of children. The accused he said, had soiled hair and clothes and the con stable detected a strong odour of alcohol. Mr. Nelligan said when the accused was asked to go outside she staggered. The police officer found her car outside, with the keys in the ignition and the interior light on. Ms Marshall told the officer she had driven there not that long before, but she was unsure where she was. There was an open case of beer in the back seat. Ms Marshall was taken to the police station for a breathalizer test. The first reading was 300 mg, the second was 290, Mr. Nelligan told the court. Ms Marshall's attorney said that the accused had been going through a period of stress, with the death of her common-law husband. She had applied for social assistance. Ms Marshall was given 90 days to pay her fine. Tournament Champs Here's the winning Blyth Novice team from the Little Lions Tournament, which was played in Blyth March 21-22. Interspersed with the fitness activities will be refresh ment breaks and demonstrations. Julie Twynham, a one time fig ures skating coach in Brussels, who now works at the Fitness Institute is one of the scheduled demonstra tors. "There is 25 minutes of exercise at a stretch," Mrs. Houston says. "It is not hard stuff. Last year we had a lot of seniors. Of last year's 100 participants the youngest was three years of age and the oldest was 86." She says that businesspeople and other groups will often get together as a team. "It's a fun night. The idea is to get people to participate." "It's not a fit club for the fit," said Ms Leitch. "We want to bring in the unfit." Being coordinated isn't as impor tant as one might think either. "You can have two left feet, but you can still have fun," says Ms Leitch. Prizes, are awarded for such fun things as the person with the sweatiest brow and best costume. Prior to beginning the fitness por tion participants must fill out a readiness question from a co-ordi nator of the Heart and Stroke Foun dation. Also a representative from the Public Health Department will be taking blood pressures before and after, said Mrs. Houston. Pledge sheets can be picked up at The Citizen. Prizes are awarded for fundraising as well. For $10 in pledges, participants will get a fit ness pin. For $50 they will also receive waterweights while $100 brings means a T-shirt as well. For anyone with $200 in pledges they will, in addition to all the other items, receive a sweatshirt or the entire suit for $400. Last year a total of $3700 was raised. Mrs. Houston is hoping to hold a similar event in Brussels in Febru ary, provided she can get the com munity support. "The big thing is the arena. If they won't donate the use, it just takes too much of a chunk out of the proceeds," she said, adding that the money raised is used for surgery not for research. "It's something that could affect all our lives, so I can't see why anyone wouldn't help support it." g 00 per 80 lb. bag Call 887-6069 Or 887-6579 BACKSAVERS *Water Softener Salt Distributions FREE HOME DELIVERY Pellets with Resingard Cleansing Formula “7 99 per 80 lb.
