Ethel veterinarian excels at speed skating BY BONNIE GROPP Kathy Hunt is an excellent exam ple for middle-age. The 38-year-old Ethel woman recently copped second place in her event at the North American short track speed skating championship in Sardis, B.C. Having just started the sport last September Kathy only missed first place by one point. Her top competitor was a nation al level skater 10 years ago. "This was quite an exciting experience to have been in such a close competi tion with her," said Kathy. Equally exciting, said Kathy, was that after the event the gold medallist took her aside and offered some pointers to improve her performance. Kathy competed in the Masters Women, for female skaters over 30 years of age. To get to the nation als, skaters must skate four dis tances, and get within eight per The cutting edge cent of the record in at least two of them. Kathy qualified in all four. At Sardis, she won a silver in the 770, 1000 and 1500 metres. Her first place finish in the 500 metres was also a new record. Kathy's interest in speed skating developed after someone she met at an in-line skating race suggested it. "I was hooked the first time I tried it," she says. A natural athlete, the biggest challenge for Kathy, was adjusting to the technique of speed skating. "I'm very lucky to have come from a fit family. We went downhill ski ing, horseback riding, I was involved in track. I believe I was able to come so far in one year in this sport due to the fitness level I maintain and my involvement in other sports." Kathy plays on a hockey team in Wingham, jogs, and weight trains. During the summer she competes in 10K runs and biathalons, which she says, "are fun ways to keep in shape". The technique, for speed skating, she says, is very efficient. "You go for maximum speed and glide, with as little effort as possible." Kathy improves her performance by regular practises at the Kitchen er-Waterloo Sertoma Speed Skat ing Club, located at Doon campus of Conestoga College. She spends two-hour sessions there two times a week. While the second hour is designed for the elite, she says, the first hour is recreational and involves family members. "I enjoy it for that aspect," says Kathy adding that one by one her children are joining her. "It's unique to have a sport that the whole family can participate in," she said. Like her husband John, Kathy is a veterinarian, but she sidelined her career to raise their four small chil dren, Carla, 9, Bryce, 7, Brett, 4 and Cayli, 21 months. In addition to being home for them, she is an excellent role model of the benefits of physical activity. John, who has played hockey, has recently taken up weight training and jogging. A pond in the back yard of the property, Kathy says has been an excellent training ground for their young family to learn skating. Even little Cayli has had skates on, said Kathy. Running is also "a family thing", said Kathy who has several inter esting rigs that make it easy for the children to come along for the ride. To keep herself prepared for next summer's speed skating season, Kathy is planning to participate in a dry land training program, designed to strengthen leg muscles. "Or turn them to mush from what I here," she adds, smiling. Coming into what is considered a young sport al her age does not faze Kathy in the least. "A lol of people will say, not unkindly, it's too bad I'm so old," said Kathy. "But, I don't feel 38. I believe if you keep active, you can slow down the hands of lime." To prove it, she is hoping to be good enough to qualify for the Sr. "A" Women's division for 18 years and older. "Il's definitely a faster group." / Looking at her, there's little doubt, she'll give them a run for their money.
