Resource Management in Walton, attended the joint meeting of the North Huron Environmental and Economic Development Groups to discuss the in-vessel composting system being constructed in Hensall. Two local entrepeneurs were pre sent at the joint meeting of the North Huron Environment and Economic Development groups in Brussels Library on April 9 to dis cuss their two environmental pro jects. Dave Rapson, owner of Total Demolition, gave an informative talk regarding his move to recycle wood waste and other building material. Mr. Rapson said when he first started in his business it was no problem to get rid of wood waste at the landfills. Now, however, the landfill costs take a big part of his job so he began to look at alterna tives used in other countries. After deciding on a shredding machine to recycle the product for MOE gives to Hensall composter The Ministry of the Environment has committed $440,970 to the Vil lage of Hensall to fund a central composting project, Paul Klopp (MPP-Huron) announced April 8 on behalf of Environment Minister Ruth Grier. The funding is the min istry's contribution toward the esti mated cost of $975,000 for an in-vessel composting system, which includes design and approvals, site preparation, pur chase of equipment, monitoring and testing. This funding will complement the financial contribution of the vil lage of Hensall. As well, three local Avoid foods kept in 'Danger Zone' continued from page 6 ents have been kept out of the tem perature “Danger Zone” between 5°C (41 °F) and 60°C (140°F) before being served. Cold buffets “chefs special table” are risky par ticularly if the food is not kept refrigerated or held on an open ter race. Flies are also attracted. • Do not eat uncooked meal, fish, shellfish, and prawns or shrimp (the latter may have been harvested from contaminated waters). These foods should be well cooked, just prior to serving. • Do not drink milk or eat milk products unless you know it has been pasteurized and stored pro perly. The Health Unit suggests these precautions be observed as well: • In tropical climates wear footwear to avoid getting infections from parasites which can enter your body through the skin of your feet. Avoid swimming, wading, wash such things as animal bedding, landscape chips, and fuel Mr. Rap son said he then needed to find suitable property. He secured a 100 - acre site at Lot 18, Cone. 6 in Morris town ship, which is about one mile from the existing township landfill site. It has been fenced to Ministry of Environment specifications and he has received a Certificate of Approval to proceed. He can now, start stockpiling material of his own and hopes to have the machine up and running for his own materi als by this summer. Mr. Rapson said establishing Central Huron Recycling Centre Inc. was principally to help his demolition business, but eventually it may become cost effective enough for others to use. Presently elevators will contribute 67 per cent of the costs of capital expendi tures. Provincial contribution towards the cost of capital expendi tures of this project is 33 per cent. This project represents an opportu nity to demonstrate a specific in vessel composting technology in Ontario. The facility will also be used for composting trials and it is anticipated that it will receive other wet wastes from surrounding municipalities. “I am pleased to see that the vil lage of Hensall has submitted a cre ative project to divert waste from ing, or immersion in waters known to harbour parasites. • Consider your personal health. If you require constant medication, ensure that you take an adequate supply with you. In many countries the exact medicines you may require may not be available. If your personal health requires it, obtain a “Medic Alert” bracelet. The information given on the bracelet is international. If you know that you will need a blood supply, arrange ahead to ensure its availability. • Avoid sleeping on the beach. This will prevent illness from bites of various insects. Insect repellents with DEET as the main ingredient should deter insects from biting. • When swimming choose salt waler (ocean) or a swimming pool that is chemically treated, e.g. chlo rine. Traveller's diarrhea may occur in spite of the above precautions. he would have to charge a lipping fee. He offered some examples of tipping fees in other areas, from $130 in Toronto to $50 in Owen Sound, but said he would have to work on his own material for a while to establish a cost. House materials would have to be sorted, he said, as some things, such as paints, and pressure treated woods are not allowed. The shredder, once going, could hopefully handle tree stumps from road construction. It could also be the perfect solution to those left over Christmas trees, provided every piece of decoration has been removed. The second speaker was Chris Lee of L.H. Resource Management. Mr. Lee discussed his company's contribution to the new central composting project in Hensall. His interest in composting blos somed about two years ago after completing a composting system for the University of Minnesota. The Hensall project, which is being used to get rid of the mill waste, about 20,000 cubic metres a year, is going to be leading-edge DAVE KAPSON landfill sites,” Mr. Klopp said. “Projects like this one will make a significant contribution towards Ontario's goal of at least 25 per cent waste diversion in 1992 and 50 per cent by the year 2,000. “I am also delighted to see that local businesses are participating with both local and provincial governments in the development and funding of this waste reduction project,” he said. The in-vessel composting system consists of several concrete chan nels in which forced aeration and mechanical mixing promote the composting process. Symptoms of mild diarrhea may be relieved by anti-diarrhea prepa rations available at your pharmacy. Be sure to purchase these before departure. It is recommended you slay on a clear fluid diet for 24 hours. Symptoms of diarrhea, fever and or vomiting for more than 24 hours suggest a more serious illness such as Salmonellosis, Giardiasis, Shiegellosis or Amoebiasis to name a few. Medical attention should be sought. It is suggested a stool spec imen be submitted for analysis whenever continuous diarrhea occurs. Contact your physician, hospital or health unit for more information. If you choose to be sexually active while on vacation be respon sible and take precautions to pro tect your health. Use condoms to help prevent exposure to sexually transmitted diseases, such as AIDS. Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. technology, he said. That much waste would have reduced the life of the landfill site by about 15 years, said Mr. Lee, so that was a big motivation. The material is pul at the begin ning of a channel every day and moves down the channel at 10-foot intervals. By the time it's at the end, there should be composte, said Mr. Lee. He said they anticipate being able to handle a variety of materials, particularly in the mills' down times. "There are tremendous vol umes of composte waste being cre ated, well before it gets to your table. There's a trail of rotten let tuce from here to California with the bulk of it in Ontario," he said. Though most things organic will break down into composte, there is often trouble with what municipali ties will put in. Commercial ones can be monitored, said Mr. Lee. In addition to government fund ing from the Ministry of the Envi ronment, the Hensall mill owners have provided financial assistance for the $900,000 project as well. Of the budgeted amount, said Mr. Lee, $30,000 is included for lab analysis.
