Theatre stages Singing together for a Spring Sing! a choral extravaganza at Blyth Memorial Community Hall, are the Blyth Festival Singers and St. Marys Children's Choir on Sat­ urday, May 2 at 8 p.m. Conductors Wade Whittaker and Eileen Bald­ win lead their choirs through a springtime serenade of the classics, spirituals, love songs, the blues, contemporary Canadian composers and even a medley of songs from The Phantom of the Opera. The St. Marys Children's Choir is The Phantom comes to Centre in the Square A $10 million Canadian national touring production of Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera will be staged in Kitchener's The Centre in the Square this November. Starting Nov. 4, the haunting musical will be performed 31 times ending Nov. 29. The touring production of this famous play was staged by the same director (Harold Prince) and production designer (Maria Bjom- son) who were responsible for the acclaimed Toronto production of Phantom of the Opera. This pro­ duction is in its third record-break­ ing year at Toronto's Pantages Theatre and will continue there on an indefinite basis, stated a press release. Phantom of the Opera is based on the classic novel by Gaston Ler- oux and tells the story of a hideous­ ly deformed Phantom who lurks beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all its occupants. He falls fatally in love with a young sopra­ no, Christine Daae, and devotes himself to creating a new start for the Opera and nurturing her extraordinary talents. In the touring production coming to Kitchener, Jeff Hyslop stars as the phantom, Patti Cohenour as Christine and David Rogers as the romantic lead, Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny. Co­ founded in 1981 by four teachers from the Perth County Board of Education, the choir's conductor today is Ms. Baldwin. The choir has earned consistent praise at Kiwanis Music Festivals in London and Stratford, and performed in set­ tings from cathedrals to malls and school gymnasiums. They board a plane on June 25 for a summer con­ cert tour of Sweden and Denmark, Kitchener performances will be at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sat­ urday evenings with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets range from $60 to $81.50 for Tuesday through Saturday evenings and Saturday and Sunday matinees and cost $49.50 to $70.50 on Wednesday matinees. Carol Carter accompanies the choir on the piano under the direction of conductor Wade Whitaker.
