This apparent lack of concern in fuel consumption keeps sales of older eight-cylinder cars moving. "Most of our customers are look ing for higher priced automobiles and used late models," said Mr. Richmond. Mr. Rice has found a lot of younger people buy the older model vehicles. Other things popular in auto sales this year include cars with air-con ditioning. "Air conditioning is a very important option today," says Mr. McGrath while Mr. Tolton says air conditioning is the number one option people ask for. Hot-weather engine problems may be caused by fuel If you drive a late model car with port fuel injection, you may encounter poor engine performance during the warm summer months. The problem, however, might not be with your particular car's engine. More than likely the fault is the fuel you put in it at your local gas station. An area of major concern with many current fuels is the variability of gasoline detergent levels. Many gasolines with insufficient deter gency can foul modem engine port fuel-injector systems with deposits, which seriously impair perfor mance in starting, running and acceleration. “We're working to push the stan dards of automotive quality to new heights,” says Dr. France. “High- technology vehicles require high- technology fuel.” While some oil companies are presently marketing gasoline of high-technology quali ty, Dr. France emphasizes the need for ALL companies to move toward improving the detergent qualities of their gasolines, which would be formulated to keep fuel injectors clean. Dr. Wayne France, assistant head of General Motors Research Labo ratories' Fuels and Lubricants department, says that disparities in gasoline additive levels and volatil ity can have adverse effects on both driveability and emission levels with today's high-technology, port fuel-injected engines. MOTORING “A change to less volatile fuels (those which have less vaporiza tion) would decrease the hot-weath er driveability problems some vehicle owners experience in the summer.” says Dr. France.
