Ready for Spring
David Hastings of McNeil’s Auto Body checks over the engine compartment of a 1966
Chevrolet Half Ton owned by Kevin Pennington of Brussels. After winter storage, all vehicles
should have a basic check over to make sure everything is still functioning properly.
THIS OUT!
Spring means different things for
different peop’e. For many classic
car owners it means removing their
precious treasures from winter stor
age.
Your car may have been fine
when you parked it in storage last
fall but you must remember it has
been sitting idle since. A basic
check over before you tear off
down the highway would be appro
priate.
Don McNeil of McNeil's Auto
Body has a few basic suggestions
for those bringing their cars out of
storage.
The owner should watch for gas
leakage around the carburetor and
check the flex hoses for cracks. As
■c .afety precaution someone should
;c standing nearby with a fire
xtinguisher.
If the vehicle was stored in a
bam, mice or squirrels can some-
limes get in around the engine com
partment, building nests and
chewing wiring. The owner should
also check for mice nests built up
in the exhaust system.
One way to get around the prob
lem of mice, Don says, "is to add a
little transmission fluid in the car
buretors to smoke them out when
ihe engine is fired up." Placing
nothballs in the tailpipes and in the
car itself is also a good idea.
The owner should also check the
exhaust for rust damage. Moisture
gathering under the vehicle may rot
out the muffler system. Don says,
"A stainless steel exhaust will help
to eliminate most of this problem."
The owner should check the elec
trical wiring, making sure the brake
lights and signal lights are still
functioning properly.
The tires should be checked,
making sure they are not cracked,
and that the pressure is still up.
They may appear to be all right, but
looks can be deceiving.
All fluid levels should be
checked, for the engine may have
leaked oil, or the transmission or
radiator may have lost fluid over
the winter.
The ball and steering joints
should also be checked over and
lubricated.

Is clean air important to you?
According to a national survey of

U.S. motorists more than anything
else.
When you neglect your vehicle's
emissions control system, we all
suffer from polluted air, wasted
fuel, sub-standard vehicle perfor

costs for mandatory vehicle inspec
