The Citizen, 1992-04-15, Page 2PAG? 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 1992. Area speaker continues winning ways MARGARET JARVIS Margaret Jarvis, 18, of Brussels, has come a long way in her nine years of public speaking, proving that hard work does indeed pay off. After coming "so close the past two years, Miss Jarvis has finally won the Multiple District A-9 competi tion in Shelburne, on April 6. A Grade 13 student at F.E. Madill in Wingham, she began publicly speaking in Grade 4. This confidant young lady now represents two organizations in the Brussels area; the Legion and the Lions. Recently speaking for the Brus sels Legion, Miss Jarvis won both the Local competition in Wingham and the Zone competition in Clin ton. She went on to place first in the Port Elgin District Finals, and third at the Provincial semi-Finals in Aurora. But it has been representing the Lions where she has gained her lat est success. At the Multiple District A-9 competition, in Shelburne on April 6, she placed first in the English Girl category. Miss Jarvis' winning speech, The Meaning Of Life, refers to striving towards your goals to achieve what you want out of life. Through her research and by drawing upon her on experiences, Miss Jarvis has come to the conclusion that the "essence of life is the search for happiness and the fulfillment of one's dreams." Miss Jarvis will go on to the MD "A" Effective Speaking Contest Finals in Toronto, May 1-3. All the provinces east of Ontario will be participating in the competition. One thing she enjoys about her opportunity is that total strangers quite often approach her, congratu lating her on her speeches. She also enjoys remaining in contact with many of the people she has met through the various events. Miss Jarvis wishes to thank the Legion and the Lions for helping her through it all. For as she says "without them it all wouldn't have been possible." Miss Jarvis' future ambition is to be a Broadcast Journalist. Last year she began working for Trilli um Cable, in Listowel, in a co-op program. To gain further experi ence, she has remained on as a vol unteer. Miss Jarvis will be appearing Wed. April 15, at 7:25 P.M. on the Lions TV Bingo (Brussels Cable 12), reciting her prize winning speech. Another local winner at the Shel burne competition on April 6, was Shawn Fair of Bluevale. The 14 year old, Grade 9 F.E. Madill stu dent won first place in the English Boys category. His speech Bach and Rock com pared how music affects different people, different ways.
