THORPE-HEARN'S GRADE 5/6 CLASS KINDERGARTEN The Kindergarten class is having lots of fun using the parachute in the gymnasium. They are playing all types of different games such as “Cat and Mouse”, “Number Change” and “Going on a Camping Trip”. In Math, they are working on centres. One group is using peg­ boards and recreating patterns, while another group is practising their numerals. The third group is playing number bingo and the fourth group is matching pets with numerals on the back of a cute puz­ zle! Each group will have a chance to work at all four of the different centres. Grade One Mrs. Brydges' grade one class went to the Maple Sugar Bush on March 27. They saw Mr. Robinson stoke the fire and tasted maple syrup and maple candy. They also learned that if one person hugged a tree, it would not be ready for tap­ ping, but if two people hugged a tree, then the tree would be ready to be tapped for sap! Grade Two Mrs. Dodd's grade two class has started egg activities with Mrs. Hessels' grade two class. They have begun putting eggs on their class­ room door and have been talking about the parts of an egg. Amanda Palmer is moving in a couple of weeks. They will really miss her. Mrs. Hessels' grade two class has become real “Computer Whizzes”. They are teaching the grade ones how to play “Barney Bear Goes to School” They are having lots of fun. The grade two are decorating eggs with Mrs. Dodds' grade two class, as well as doing some excit­ ing egg activities. On Thursday, April 2 the grade twos were in charge of Hot Dog (Doe Charlene Clark & Wayne Brubacher Friday April 17,1992 Listowel Agricultural Hall Tickets $5.00 ea. Lunch provided Music by D.J. Dancing from 8:00 p.m. -1:00 a.m. Day, with two parent volunteers to help them. They wish to thank Mrs. Marilyn Campbell and Mr. Keith Black for their assistance. Grade Three Miss Mather's grade three class has started to write their own books. They even have to edit and publish them. This week, the “Special Person of the Week” was Myron Hussey. The class was really looking for­ ward to seeing the pictures of Myron's nine brothers and sisters. The grade threes also want to welcome the new custodian(s) to our school, even though they do not know who he/she/they are yet. Grade Four Mr. Fisher's grade four class is going to the circus on Friday, April 10. On Thursday, April 2, the grade fours had a math test on Measure­ ment. On Monday, April 6, they are presenting a French assembly for the entire school. Grade Five Mr. Kerr's grade five class enjoyed learning about Pioneers. They even watched a film called Pioneer Crafts. The class listened to the final movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Some of the comments about the symphony were: Sjaan Gerth - “I liked when he put all the instruments together at the pause.” Peter Irwin - “I think it is incredi­ ble that Beethoven could write songs when he was deaf at the same time.” Michael Marks liked when “the rhythm and harmony were com­ bined”. Jeremy Sallows thought it was “interesting”. Wayne Fenton liked “the pause when the instru­ ments all came in” and David Piluke thought the “twenty-five minutes seemed like ten minutes” because he said “it was really fun!” Grade Five/Six The class has finished research­ ing and organizing the Pioneer Partner projects. The students began presenting them this week to their classmates. On April 15, when the halfway point on our “Early Settlers” unit is reached, the class will be going on a field trip to the Black Creek Pioneer Village and McMichael Canadian Art Gallery. They began working on fun East­ er activities during center time this week and have been busy learning all the songs for the musical. Most have their lines memorized already. Grade Seven Mrs. Gross's grade seven class is working on an operetta called Reading, ’Riting and Rocking. Group Three of the Novel Study groups are doing activities related to the novel Houdini. Groups One and Two are still continuing with their wildlife novel. Grade Eight Mr. Bartlett's grade eight class is solving equations with one variable in Math class. On Saturday, April 4, the grade eights, along with the grade sevens, went to Port Albert to learn about Aquatic Biology. They really enjoyed their trip. A Special Farewell On Tuesday, March 31 the school's custodians, 'Seth and Con­ nie Rawn retired. There was a spe­ cial assembly for them on Monday and the staff got together for a •small retirement party after school. Everyone wants to wish both Mr. and Mrs. Rawn a very happy retire­ ment and many years of relaxation. Staff and students appreciate the time, energy and hard work they put into cleaning the school and realize that some days it was not fun.
