Through door-to-door canvass ing, the sale of daffodils and on going donation and memorial efforts, the Huron County Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society hopes to exceed last year's fundraising effort of $154,000. Campaign chairperson Joan Middleton of Wingham is hoping that Huron people will be as gener ous to the cause as they have been in years previous. In 1991 the Huron Cancer society earned top recognition in the south western district for achieving the highest increase in campaign dona tions in one year. Last year's objec tive was set at $130,000. Monies raised through the cam paign are used to assist the Huron Unit of the Canadian Cancer Soci ety support its many programs for local people. Transportation services offered by the Huron Cancer Society con tinue to be one of the most active patient service programs. In 1991, 18 volunteer drivers throughout Huron County provided transporta tion for 115 patients to various hos pitals and clinics on a regular basis. Drivers tallied more than 43,000 km in trips made to London hospi tals, as well as those in Toronto, Hamilton, Stratford and cancer clinics and lodges. This service is supplemented by mileage payments, provided by the Huron Cancer Society. It operates at no cost to the patient. While Patient Services operate as one of the smallest and under-uti lized programs in the local Cancer Society, it is also one of the most valuable services to patients and their families. Patient Services is a broad title for a variety of services, babysit ting, assistance with medications and dressings, ostomy supplies and supplementary food are available through this program. The Reach to Recovery Support Group works to help patients deal with breast surgery recovery because of cancer. Chairperson Mary Lou Aubin of Goderich makes personal visits to recovering cancer patients. She works to net work cancer patients in support groups and this year helped to orga nize a Cancer Awareness evening for the public in Hensail.
