L7CW
discusses
temptation
Knox United Church Women
met at the Auburn United Church
on Monday, March 23 at 8 p.m. In
charge of the evening service were
Mrs. Peter Verbeek, Mrs. Robert
Arthur, Mrs. Wayne Millian and
Mrs. Gerald McDowell.
Mrs. Verbeek opened the service
with a “Springtime” reading. The
hymn “God Who Stretched the
Spangled Heaven” was sung with
Marjorie Me Dougall the capable
pianist. Scripture was read from
Genesis and panel discussion
followed. At the beginning of the
World the Snake was a symbol of
power but it coaxed Eve to eat the
forbidden fruit. However, after Eve
took the fruit from the Tree of
Knowledge of Good and Evil the
snake was demoted to be a cursed
animal. Man also had not obeyed
God and from then on it was
necessary for him to make his own
choice of bad or good.
The second scripture was on
Christ's 40 days in the wilderness.
There he was tempted. People are
tempted throughout life but must
do their best to cast temptation
aside and follow in His footsteps.
Readings for Mission was given
by Mrs. Millian. An American
leader was visiting in Russia and
discovered “Why Gospel Did Not
Die”. Though all churches were
closed, grandmothers gathered the
small children and told them the
Bible stories. The grandmas carried
on the mission of the church. All
those today taking part in Church
and Sunday School work are also
God's missionaries.
During the service two prayers
were repeated in unison. Offering
was received by Mrs. McDowell
and Mrs. Arthur and Mrs. Millian
gave the offertory prayer. Mrs.
Verbeek pronounced the Bene
diction.
A business meeting followed,
conducted by Mrs. Verbeek with
Mrs. Dunbar as secretary. Various
letters were read regarding the
upcoming London Conference,
Chatham, Westminster Weekend,
Alma College, St. Thomas and the
summer event at Silvan United
Church, London.
It was decided to pay half the
cost of delegates to Westminster.
For the 30th Anniversary it was
decided to give $30 to the U.C.W.
and $30 for Kenya women. An
upcoming wedding meal was
discussed.
For Easter seasons, the Easter
baskets will be given to various
shut-ins. Mrs. M. Bean and Mrs. E.
Lapp will be in charge and the
usual donations needed.
A delicious lunch of assorted
fruit breads and cheese was
enjoyed and a social half hour
closed the meeting.
Pie and ice cream and beverage
were served by the hostesses
Bernice Anderson, Beth Lansing,
Eppie Lawrence and Betty
Archambault.
This was the Curator meeting in
charge of Ruth Jardin.
Evelyn opened the business part
with two appropriate readings,
“The Miracle of Spring” and
“Mud”. The minutes of the
previous meeting were read by
Betty Archambault in the absence
of secretary, Kay Lapp, and were
adopted as read. Tena Empey gave
the treasurer's report. Betty also
read the correspondence and it was
dealt with.
The W.I. are invited to
Londesboro on Wednesday, May
13 at 8 p.m. to hear the Dairy
Princess speak.
Several letters were read and
donations sent. The card report was
given by Jean Plaetzer. The annual
meeting is to be held on Thursday,
April 16. Mildred Lawlor
suggested going to Kate's Kitchen
at Vanastra and after discussion,
Marjorie McDougall made a
motion to go there.
The roll call was answered by 15.
The meeting was then turned over
to the curator.
Ruth Jardin giving history and
changes of Auburn. Bernice
Anderson had a contest guessing
how many candies in the jar which
was won by Erma Cartwright.
Bernice told of a pageant Nancy
Park had on “The County of
Huron” and showed a video then
“This Land is Your Land” was
sung, led by Laura Mae Chamney.
Ruth Jardin had a contest - guess
the number of pages in a book -
won by Martha Daer. Eppie
Lawrence had a contest where
members guessed who had the
most buttons on their clothes and
Evelyn Flett won that. Betty
Archambault won Beth Lansing's
contest for birthday closest to that
day. Betty Archambault had a
contest on who had done their
dishes before coming which Ruth
Jardin won.
The singing of “O Canada”
closed the meeting.

Walkerburn
Club learns
health tips
The Walkerbum Club met at the
A & P store in Goderich for a
lesson on the Reduction of Fats in
our daily diets. They were told
about the different kinds of fats,
saturated, polyunsaturated and non
saturated. Fat is needed in your
daily diet, however, your diet
should be designed not only to
adjust the total amount of dietary
fat, but also its sources. Vegetable
oils, com oil and soya and olive are
high sources of polyunsaturated
fats. So these oils are best for
cooking and baking. Too much
butter, cream, etc. can be a source
of trouble in our daily diets.
The dietician was thanked for her
valuable information. After this the
club had a light lunch at the coffee
shop. Ten attended the meeting.
The April meeting will be at
Betty Verwey's home and the date
has been changed to Thursday,
April 30.
