UPCOMING SALES ___________________________________________ This member of the Blyth Atoms put on the speed to clear the puck from his end in this first period action in the All-Ontario playoff game against Cayuga on Saturday afternoon. Goalie Scott Bromley was on the alert as his teammate helped him out. Unfortunately the Blyth team couldn't get ahead of the strong Cayuga team and lost the championship. The game opened with Cayuga making the first shot on net. The first goal occurred at 12:09, scored by Joey Baird, assisted by Sean O'Mara. Then, only 31 seconds later, Jason Baird earned an unas sisted goal. Blyth didn't give up though and at 9:52, Darryl Bromley was assisted by Jamie Black to close the lead 2-1 for Cayuga. The puck went from end to end with good playing shown by each team. The Baird brothers broke loose, but the persistence of Trevor Wilson, Jamie Black and Mike Ansley put a stop to it. Unfortu nately, tempers started to flare up and body contact and high sticking were called against Cayuga. Although they tried every tech nique possible, Blyth was unable to score. With only four seconds remaining in the first period, Jason Baird made it 3-1 for Cayuga. The second period saw Blyth applying more pressure, but goalie, Tim Coulter kept the puck out of the crease. Then, Cayuga made two quick goals that were only nine sec onds apart. Both goals were scored by Jamie Vandehaar assisted by Jason and Joey Baird. Blyth now trailed by a 5-1 score. Then, Blyth made every attempt possible, which proved to be bene ficial. The next goal for Blyth was at 4:44 by Corey Shannon, assisted by Mike Ansley and Darryl Brom- Belgrave wins Continued from page 12. tis Knight scored off Justin Camp bell, then less than a minute later Blyth came back to tie the game again. This win gave Belgrave the "D" Championship win with the team bringing home a trophy and indi vidual players getting crests and hockey pucks. The Belgrave team was thanked for its participation, making it 20 out of the 21 tournament years that Belgrave has entered. Playoffs for the Belgrave Novices resume against Hensall on March 26 in Blyth at 6 p.m. In this best of five series Bel grave has two wins. ley. Then at 2:38, Mike Haggitt was aided by Jeff Cowan and Bromley, to close the gap 5-3 for Cayuga. Then, it was time out for all the players and time for the 50/50 draw. The winner was Wayne Carter. The third period saw Blyth on the board again at 12:17, as Jeff Cowan was helped by Bromley and Hag gitt, to close Cayuga's lead to 5-4. After that, although every attempt was made, Blyth couldn’t increase their score, while Cayuga scored three more goals to end the game 8- 4, capturing the series to move on. SPECIAL NOTE: Although Cayuga defeated Blyth four games to one, both teams have proved they are winners. First of all, by making it this far. Secondly, and most importantly was the demon stration after the game. The Atoms moms hosted Cayuga for a meal of ham and scalloped potatoes after the game. As everyone enjoyed vis iting with one and other, it was noticed that the players were nowhere to be seen. It was soon obvious that they were out on the ice again (as if they hadn't had enough). But this time, Blyth and Cayuga were on mixed teams and they cer tainly were enjoying it. It was as if the two teams had become one ... something to be proud of. We wish Cayuga the best of luck in the finals for the All-Ontario Championship vs. Oakwood. Special thanks to coaches Gary Courtney and Steve Howson, who's excellent coaching helped the Blyth Atoms get to the Semi-Finals in the All Ontario Championship.
