S ports Brussels Sprouts win ‘B’ crown at Lucknow The Brussels Sprouts travelled to Lucknow for tournament on Satur­ day, March 7. In the first game, the Sprouls worked hard, but lost a close one to Huron Township (Ripley) team by a 3-2 score, putting them into the “B” division. The Sprouts met Mildmay head- on in the second game. With Brus­ sels goalie shutting out the other team, the puck found itself behind the Mildmay goaltender 16 limes. Reaching the final game against Blyth, the Sprouts were tiring but cheered on by their fan club, they rushed from one end to the other with great defensive plays. Blyth had several chances but were unable to overtake the Brussels players. The final score was 7-3 for Brussels. Strong net-tending by Scott McDonald and Matt Clarkson, helped the Sprouts to this champi­ onship. Team captain Nolan Krotz received the Championship Trophy and each player received a banner. Congratulations team on a job well done. Members are: Scott McDonald, Robbie McClure, Matt Clarkson, Tyler Campbell, Ken McCallum, Mark Hunter, Nolan Krotz, Shawn Hocgy, Darryl Houston, Kyle Stevenson, Joel Hemingway, Brittany Kellington, Jonathan McDougall and Robbie Semple. Blyth I Novice team captain Jeremy Van Amersfoort moves in on the puck, just as a member of the Seaforth team lunges for it, in this Little Lions tournament game on Saturday afternoon. The Blyth team defeated Seaforth 5-3 and went on to capture the tournament trophy. Blyth Novices win Blyth crown The Blyth Lions hosted their 21st annual Novice Hockey Tournament this past weekend at the Blyth and District Community Centre. The Blyth Novice team split into two squads for the tournament. Although playing very well Blyth II dropped decisions to Lucknow 8- 0 and Brussels 4-0. Belgrave Novices play in Blyth tournament came up team who Belgrave The Belgrave Novices played in the Little Lions tournament in Blyth this past weekend. On March 21 they against a strong Blyth dominated the play, played with their full contingent as all the players had returned form holidays, but Blyth I trounced them 8-0. In game two, Belgrave was once again outmatched against Teeswa- ter, but played a better game than the first one. Goalie Kyle Anderson did a ter­ rific job, coming up with save after save to keep the score low. After the game, which ended with a 4-0 score for Teeswater, the opposing coaches remarked on what a great game Kyle had played. On Sunday, Belgrave came up against Blyth II, getting their first tournament win. The game started slowly with the two more evenly matched teams remaining scoreless throughout the first period. Blyth got the first goal of the game in the second period, but Craig Marks, assisted by Curtis Knight, moved in to tie the score just two minutes later. In the third period, Belgrave dominated the play and goalie Aaron Bakker did not have a lot to worry about with there not being many shots on net. Belgrave took the lead when Cur- Continued on page 13. Blyth moved on to the “D” Divi­ sion final against Belgrave. This proved to be an exciting game as the teams remained tied at two, late into the third period. Belgrave scored the winning goal with two minutes left and then added an insurance goal to edge Blyth 4-2. Ryan Lee played a strong game in the Blyth net, while Darryl McDougall and Jeff Carter tallied for Blyth. Playing on the Blyth II team were Ryan Lee, Graham Worsell, Rick Van Steelandt, Ross Clark, Nick Courtney, Jeff Carter, Adam Anderson, Jeremy Hanna, Darryl McDougall, Michael Bernard and Michael Lyons. In “C” Division finals, Teeswater dumped Brussels 4-0 and in the “B” Division final Seaforth dropped Lucknow 4-1. The Blyth I squad used victories over Belgrave 9-0, and Seaforth 5- 3, to move on to the “A” Division final. Matt Anderson led Blyth in the first game with five goals, Tyler Stewart added two and singles went to Bryce Toll and Nathan Shannon. Goal scorers for Blyth against Seaforth were Matt Anderson with two, Shawn Bromley, Jeremy Van Amersfoort and Tyler Stewart. Blyth's opponent in the “A” final was Clifford who had beat Brussels 9-0 and Lucknow 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Blyth scored three straight goals in the second period with Clifford replying late in the second to lead 3-1. Clifford came on strong in the third period, but Blyth held on and scored with 1:20 remaining to clinch the victory 4-1. Dean Wilson continued his strong goaltending in the Blyth net and goal scorers for Blyth were Matt Anderson with two, Nathan Shannon and David Ansley. Il was the first “A” Cham­ pionship trophy for Blyth in the tournament since winning it in 1987. It also marked Belgrave's 20th appearance in the Blyth Lions Toumey. Members of the Blyth I team were Dean Wilson, Shawn Brom­ ley, Joel Arthur, Bryce Toll, Jeremy Van Amersfoort, Derek Cook, Matt Anderson, Nathan Shannon, David Ansley and Tyler Stewart. The Blyth Lions Club sponsored both Blyth teams and provided meals and prizes for all who partic­ ipated in the tournament. The Blyth players would like to thank the Lions for their sponsor­ ship and the Lions ladies for preparing the meals.
