Students welcome custodian Artist at work Caroline Exel was quite wrapped up in her creative work at Brussels Library last Thursday afternoon. Youngsters enjoyed a special day of activities, puzzles, riddles and jokes, giving Mom and Dad a spring break too. BY LANETTE TODD AND VICKI RICHARDS As many already know there has been a new addition to the staff at Brussels Public School. Her name is Mrs. Bennewies and she is the new custodian. Most people don't know Mrs. Bennewies very well so she was interviewed to help everyone get to know her better. Mrs. Bennewies has recently been married and she commutes to Brussels from Seaforth. When asked if she minds driving back and forth she said, “so far the driving hasn't been bad.” Maybe she'll change her mind next winter. Mrs. Bennewies explained that she was doing part-time custodial work before and then she decided that she'd prefer full-time work, so when the position here needed to be filled she put in a bid and got the job. When asked if the job here was what she expected she said, “Yes it has been. It's a lot of fun and plenty of work.” Mr. Bennewies will also be help ing at the school. On Friday, March 13, Brussels Public School held a “Fun Day”. In preparation for this event students decorated classroom doors and bul letin boards with surfers, surf boards, beach balls, people swimming and many other colour ful displays. When Friday rolled around, stu dents participated in activities, such as skateboard, swimming, beach ball games, sand castle building, beach blanket bingo and many oth ers. Students were also requested to dress up in beach attire such as shorts t-shirts and sun hats. There were prizes for the funkiest hat and a picnic in the gym. Students from grade six to grade eight are paired together to write and illustrate books for the primary students. With the help of Mrs. Raymond these books should be finished by April 16. Hopefully these books will be well used and a good asset to the school library. On Wednesday, March 4, Dawn Engle, a student at Fanshawe Col lege in London, came to talk to grade eight about her courses in Early Childhood Education, ECE. Dawn was an excellent speaker and let students know what to expect at college. From the cost of books to the layout of the college she was a great help. Thanks for coming Dawn! This year the magazine campaign was very successful with a total of $1,686 raised to put towards the instrumental music program. On March 5 any student who sold a magazine went to the gym for lunch. When everyone had gone to the gym they received half an assorted sub. Mr. Kemp drew names for prizes. There were five wallets, five packages of markers, five watches, and one thrcc-in-onc flashlight to be won. The flashlight, which was the grand prize, was won by continued on page 8 WMS studies Japan Brussels The March meeting of Melville W.M.S. was held at the home of President Helen Elliott, who opened the meeting with the poem, “This is the Day the Lord Has Made” and prayer.
