The current board room, for instance, will hold up to 40 people but there is only one toilet for men and one for women, intended for use by both staff and visitors. Large washrooms will allow plenty of relief for visi tors to the new conference room. There are also lots of coatracks. As well as the large seminar room there is a smaller board room which can be used by small groups like the executive of farm organiza tions. The number and variety of meeting room spaces will alleviate a chronic problem of too few meet ing spaces for the demands. "It has n't been good to say no to people," Mr. Humphries says. It has been discouraging to the clients and it has been discouraging to staff to The office location may be tough to find at first, tucked in off Don St., west of Highway 4 in the north end of Clinton. not be able to provide the services needed. When the building is finally ready for occupation it will bring to an end the long saga of the search for a new OMAF office in Huron. For years there had been hopes a new office might be built as had been built in other counties but Huron, the top food producing county in the province, lagged behind. There were negotiations at one point to move the office to a renovated portion of the Huronview Home for the Aged south of Clin ton but that was put off because government officials felt it would cost as much to renovate an old building as to build a new one. Plans were finally drawn up in 1987 and land was purchased in the north end of Clinton but there were more delays. In the end the build ing might still not have been built if not for the provincial government's anti-recession program. OMAF was able to go to the shelf and pull out the 1987 plans and win part of the increased budget. Mr. Humphries credits designers with updating those plans to improve the original design with touches such as the larger windows and putting the boilers in the base ment instead of on the main floor. While the staff will be enjoying the new quarters, they'll have their familiar old furniture around them. Currently the old building smells of paint as all the old filing cabinets and desks get a fresh coat of paint. - There are critics of the plans, Mr. Humphries says, but he reminds them that the anti-recession money was going to be spent anyway so Huron might as well get it as some one else. When others complain that the new building is more luxurious than needed Mr. Humphries says he likes to remember what a relative of his used to say. When someone would criticize him for driving a big car instead of a cheap one he'd reply "Nothing is too good for a farmer."
