New conference rooms can host more meetings
Plenty of room
Bob Humphries, Ag. Rep. for Huron looks at the new
conference room at the OMAF office. After years of having
to turn away groups looking for meeting space, the new
facility will have much more room.

downtown quarters, the offices
aren’t large. Each is a government
standard 10x10 foot (actually
slightly less since they're metric)
and will have room for just a desk,
file cabinet and a couple of chairs.
Still for people who were crammed
three and four to a basement office
in the old building, the bright new
offices will seem like heaven. Mr.
Humphries' long-narrow office is
located in a special extension -off
the porch-like rear entrance, again
filled with natural light from a large
window. (The building's architects,
Mr. Humphries says, were aware
that new regulations in public
buildings in Europe set minimum
standards for the amount of natural
light buildings must have.) Some
natural light is available in all but a
few offices and these will be for
staffers who aren't in the office
much or visiting specialists.
One of the facilities Mr.
Humphries is most excited about is
a resource library. Presently, he
said, (here is a collection of scien
tific reference materials scattered
through offices all over the build
ing. The material can be collected
into one spot in the library and be
available to both staff and clients.
For many people, the most used
part of the building, and the one
that shows the most obvious
improvement, is the conference
area. Most people will enter from
the rear entrance of the building
into a foyer just outside the largest
conference room. The new confer
ence room is large enough to
accommodate 100 people on chairs
or 56 at tables and chairs at semi
nars and short courses. OMAF isn't
trying to run competition with large
meeting facilities such as the Brus
sels Morris and Grey arena, Mr.
Humphries says, and large meet
ings will still have to be held else
where. The room can be divided
into two smaller rooms by a folding
door. Large windows provide a
bright atmosphere but special
blinds will darken the room when
movies are being shown.
There's a small demonstration
kitchen off the conference room
that will allow for kitchen demon-
