Blyth Bantams win trophy BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Bantams participated in the Alvinston Bantam Tourna ment on March 8. After an opening game loss to Watford, Blyth responded with vic tories over Brussels and Mt. Brydges to claim the Consolation Championship. In Blyth's first game, Watford scored the only second period goal before the floodgates opened in the third as Watford edges Blyth 6-4. The two teams traded eight goals in the first 10 minutes of the third before Watford iced the win with a late insurance goal. Michael Bromley scored Blyth's first two goals and assisted on the third to give Blyth their final lead. Tim Lyons scored the goal before Walford rebounded with three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead. After assisting on two earlier goals, Michael deJong brought Blyth to within a goal after Ryan Chamney set him up for his point shot with five minutes remaining. Although Blyth had numerous chances to tie the contest, Watford scored with one minute remaining to send Blyth into the consolation round with this 6-4 loss. Togetherness Goderich Atoms demonstrated true team togetherness in their game against Kitchener Saturday in the Brussels Optimist Club's Atom Tournament. No less than four members of the team crowded into the crease to help their goaltender when he was challenged close-in by a Kitchener shooter. Blyth met league rival Brussels in game two and Blyth rode Jerrod Button's hat-trick and Chris Lee's goaltending to a 5-0 whitewash of Brussels. Tim Lyons won the opening faceoff to Peter Craig who sent Jer rod Button in for the opening goal after just seven seconds had ticked off the clock. Button then deflated the opposition before the three minute mark as he wristed an unas sisted short-handed goal. Button completed his hat-trick midway through the second as he finished off a two in one break with Tim Lyons for a 3-0 Blyth lead. Lyons then gave Blyth a 4-0 lead two minutes into the third as he re directed Michael de Jong's pass into the net for Blyth's second short-handed goal of the game. The scoring was completed three minutes later as Benjie Hakkers finished off a three-way passing play with linemates Christopher Howson and Tim Cowan. With this 5-0 win, Blyth advanced to the Consolation Cham pionship game where they shaded Mt. Brydges 3-2. Mt. Brydges opened the scoring with 42 seconds left in the first period but Blyth responded to tie the game with 18 seconds left in the first. Passes by Christopher Howson and Michael Bromley led to a breakaway goal by Ryan Chamney as Chamney whipped a shot into the top shelf. Blyth scored the only two second period goals to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Michael de Jong gave Blyth a 2-1 lead as Ryan Chamney and Tim Lyons set him up at the edge of the crease for an easy tap in. A power play goal gave Blyth a 3-1 lead as Jerrod Button set up Peter Craig's point shot. The rebound went right to Michael Bromley who slid it into the open net. Although Mt. Brydges scored with four minutes left in the game, Blyth hung on to claim their third tournament Consolation Cham pionship of the season with this 3-2 victory. The season is now winding down with Blyth, Brussels and Zurich currently battling for the Group Championship. They each play a home and away game with the other two teams in a round-robin to crown a Group Champion. Program begins to recycle button batteries Wait! Don't throw away those old batteries from watches and hearing aids. The North Huron Environment Group is planning to begin a pro gram to collect the expended circu lar batteries for recycling. The plan involves placing containers at most of the button battery points of sale across North Huron. The Group will be contacting photography, jewellery, and hardware stores in the area to see if they are interested in participating in the program. Battery companies recover the silver and mercury from the used cells. The batteries will be sent to a Mississauga company which will then forward them to an American recycling company. Larger batteries, such as those from radios and flashlights, are not recyclable. Companies say most of the mercury has been removed from these batteries and the Min istry of the Environment considers them safe for landfill sites. Anyone wanting more informa tion on the button battery collection program on the North Huron Environment Group can call Donna White at 887-6572.
