THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 1992. ail CayugaBly th Atoms drop 2, trail Cayuga The second game of the all Ontario Atoms Semi-Finals, was held on Saturday, March 14, in the Blyth Community Centre, to an enormous crowd of fans. The Blyth Arena was also the setting of an Industrial Hockey Tournament being held March 12-15 conclusive. So, at 5:00 p.m., it was hockey on a smaller scale, so to speak...the size of the participants, that is, not necessarily their skating abilities. Blyth already had one game under their belt and they were hoping they could capture game two on home ice. After meeting Cayuga last weekend, Blyth Atoms had learned the hard way that number 12, Jason Baird had to be covered at all times. Cayuga applied pressure right off the bat, or should I say stick. At 14:30, Scott Bromley had made the first stop of the day. Then, Amanda Anderson fled up the ice with Michael Haggitt, but, unfortunately, Cayuga's goalie, Tim Coulter had stopped the puck too. The first goal got on the board at the 12:18 mark, with Darryl Bromley opening the score, assisted by Michael Haggitt. Blyth now led 1-0 against Cayuga. Again, the opposition made their usual attempt, this time number 12 was stopped, thanks to Chris Carter and Michael Ansley, who never backed off him. They were determined to keep him from taking shots on net. This is when Baird got the first two penalties of the game, one for body slashing, the other for hitting from behind, at the 4:16 mark. Blyth then doubled their lead at 3:24, when Bromley scored again. The 1:08 remaining in Baird’s first penalty was then cancelled. There was two minutes with a man advantage remaining in Blyth's favor. Unfortunately, that was brought to a halt at the 2:13 mark, when Corey Shannon received a penalty for tripping. So, for 1:11 minutes, Cayuga had the man advantage. The tight playing of Jamie Black, Trevor Wilson and Mike Ansley was shown, all taking turns on defense, to fight the two minutes off. The first period ended 2-0 in Blyth's favor. At 12:11 in the second period, Cayuga got on the board, when Jamie Baird had an accurate shot from the blue line to half Blyth's lead to 2-1. Again, Blyth showed their good passing abilities by Anderson, Haggitt and Cowan, but their goalie put the puck under his glove and held onto it. In the next few minutes Jason Baird broke loose again, but quick thinking defenceman Michael Ansley, was able to push the puck away from him. Baird later collected the puck again, but Bromley held onto it with the goalie's mitt. Soon, it was obvious that some players were getting tired, as many were out for long intervals. The period ended 2-1 for Blyth. Fortunately, the second period was over, for everyone needed to conserve and regenerate their energy for the third period. During intermission, draws were held. The first one was for a big box of groceries, courtesy of Scrimgeour's Food Market, Blyth. The winner was Bruce Howson. The second draw was a 50/50 draw, with referee Jerry DeBruin winning $75.00. Blyth Minor Hockey Committee wish to thank everyone who donated and participated in the fund raising held for Minor Hockey. The third period saw Jason Baird on the ice for most of the period. ; ?<- Covering up Blyth Atoms goaltender Scott Bromley tenses for a shot from a Cayuga forward but his defenceman Corey Shannon comes to the rescue in the OMHA semi-final game played in Blyth Saturday. Blyth took a 2-0 lead but couldn't hold on and lost 3-2. Both teams took control and possessed the puck to make it anyone's game. Then, at 10:08, Baird slammed the puck in ticing the same, two all. Then, Bromley, Cowan and Haggitt attempted to get it back, but goalie Tim Coulter, was determined to hold onto the puck. At 7:27 Cayuga took the lead by a 3-2 margin. After that, both teams came close to earning another feather in the cap, but, unfortunately close doesn't count. Although Bromley was pulled from net in the last 52 seconds, they were unable to score and Cayuga took the game 3-2. In both games of the series, the visiting team had captured the game by one goal. Afterwards, Blyth demonstrated its hospitality when the Atom Moms hosted both teams back at Blyth Legion, for a meal of chili and hot dogs. The pop provided was courtesy of the Blyth Legion. Cayuga was very impressed and it gave everyone a chance to get to know one another sending an ideal message to children, that is simply called Good Sportsmanship. The Atoms game on Sunday, March 15 began with Cayuga making the first attempt on net, but Blyth opened the score at the 13:20 mark, thanks to Michael Courtney and Michael Haggitt. Blyth's defencemen, Michael Ansley, Trevor Wilson, Corey Shannon and Jamie Black all demonstrated their abilities many times over, but, unfortunately, Cayuga's Jason and Joey Baird, never gave up on shooting at the net, which soon paid off. They then took the lead at the 7:17 mark, earned by Sandy Moses and Jason Baird. Baird then turned around to score again at the 2:24 mark, unassisted this time. The first period ended 3-1 in Cayuga's favor, with no penalties earned by either team. The second period saw Cayuga extend their lead, getting six goals, before Blyth was able to get their second goal al the 2:35 mark, [_• earned by Darryl Bromley and Jeff Cowan. A sudden change in entertainment was then provided by the referee who lost his balance and fell onto the ice. Obviously, he must also be an umpire, for he made the signal that the runner was safe. Nice way to cover up!! Cayuga earned one more goal with only 19 seconds left in the second period to end it 8-2 in their favor. Jason Baird had earned a hat trick in the second period alone. The third period opened with Blyth making the first stop in the net, but Cayuga continued to apply pressure. At 8:13, Baird earned a short handed goal, putting them up to a 9-2 lead. Attempts were made at both ends, but, Blyth couldn't increase their score. At 3:32 Cayuga scored the final goal of the game ending it 10-2 in their favour. Although Michael Haggitt, Darryl Bromley, Amanda Anderson, Mike Courtney, Jeff Cowan and Chris Carter tried many times to score, Cayuga’s goalie, Tim Coulter was hot. Cayuga is now ahead two game to one in the series. Everyone was invited back supper, provided by Cayuga's team. It was appreciated before the long trip home. Cayuga now returns to Blyth Saturday, March 21, at 4:30 and since Blyth won the flip at the beginning of the series, game five, if necessary, will be held in Blyth on Sunday March 2 at 4:30 also. Please plan to come out and give Blyth Atoms all the support available. SPECIAL NOTE: For coach Steve Howson and many fans, Jason Baird has brought memories of 1971-72 back to them. It was then that Blyth's Pee Wee team which Steve was on, took the all Ontario Championship. There they defeated Milverton by a score of 10 to 9 for Blyth. One player earned eight goals and one assist of the nine goals scored, his name is Craig Hartsburgh, who later went on to play for the Minnesota North Stars.
