Former Brussels physican dies
A one-time Brussels physician
Dr. W.D.S. Jamieson passed away
on March 13, 1992, in Toronto.
Dr. Jamieson was bom in Inver
ness, Quebec (Eastern Townships)
on April 13, 1897, where his family
had been farming since 1836.
He received his education at
Inverness Academy and went on to
study at McGill University Medical
School where he graduated with a
medical degree in 1921.
He interned at Jeffrey Hale Hos
pital in Quebec for one year and at
the Royal Victoria Hospital in
Montreal for two years, specializ
ing in Urology.
He practiced general medicine
for a year in Hamilton, then for
three years in Conn.
In 1927, Dr. Jamieson began his
practice of General Medicine in
Brussels, where he remained until
1947.
He married the former Anna
Coutts of Conn in 1931. She
attended Mt. Forest High School,
trained as a nurse at Hamilton Gen
eral Hospital, graduated with hon
ours as an R.N and was Assistant
Supervisor of Nurses before her
marriage. Together Dr. Jamieson
and his wife worked in Brussels
attending to the well-being of the
community and surrounding dis
trict. Mrs. Jamieson passed away in
1976.
Dr. Jamieson started on the first
prenatal programmes in the area,
stressing proper nutritional needs
for mother and child and teaching
general healthcare.
In 1947 he went to Toronto
where he worked with the Ontario
Government in the Dept, of Helath,
TB Division until 1972. During
that time he established a system of
TB clinics throughout Ontario, to
check on patients released from
tuberculosis sanitoriums and moni
tor their conditions. He as Physi
cian in Charge of Mass X-Ray
Chest Surveys for the government.
Dr. Jamieson was a Presbyterian
elder from 1938 until his death. His
family had always been active with
the Presbyterian Church. Several
uncles and aunts were ministers
and missionaries and his immediate
family was raised with a church
awareness.
The impact of the country doctor
in general in Ontario's history is
certainly worth a study, but the
impact of the country on the doctor
cannot be underestimated. Dr.
Jamieson always spoke highly of
the people in the Brussels area,
fondly remembering various
episodes, explaining a few
tragedies, but always following the
doctor's code of ethical confidence.
This was reciprocated by the many
townspeople who would approach
him during his periodic visits to
Brussels, with an open friendliness,
concern for his well-being and rem
iniscences.
Always his concern was for chil
dren.
Dr. Jamieson kept in touch with
the community through the Brus
sels newspaper.
Besides his wife, Dr. Jamieson
was predeceased by his three sis
ters, Sarah, Mary and Grace (Mrs.
Alec Gessner) of Burford.
Funeral services for Dr. Jamieson
were held at 2 p.m. on March 16 at
Glenview Presbyterian Church in
Toronto.
