Baptism held at Christian Reformed The Sunday, March 8 services at Blyth Christian Reformed Church were conducted by Rev. John DeVries of London. Rev. DeVries is in charge of co-ordinating pas toral services in prisons, hospitals, and senior citizen homes in the London to Windsor regions. The service opened with singing “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” as well as “Children of the Heavenly Father.” Sacrament of Holy Baptism was administered to Katelyn Nicole Roetcisoender, daughter of Richard and Patricia and to Kurds Robert Kolkman, son of Lissa and Robert. The sermon title was “Freedom From Depression”, with scripture coming from I Samuel 16: 14-23. Rev. DeVries spoke of the Dark Depression Saul experienced, throughout his life, remarking that in today's society this affliction would be labelled as a “Manic Depressive Disorder”. Statistics reveal that one out of five people will suffer slight to serious menial disorders in a lifetime and that one million Canadians are experiencing mental illness. Therefore we con clude life has its dark moments. So many people are also suffer ing from cancer or a host of other physical illnesses. It seems so unfair ... so wrong! And it can be overwhelming. What is the answer to all this? It is clear that any kind of suffering or problem is the result of living in a sin-filled and imper fect world. Although each of us will undergo certain trials “God does not aban don the work of his hand.” He will give you the resources needed to, overcome darkness no matter what your situation. We as Christians can help those undergoing problems by reaching out and giving through friendship and love, a word of praise, an affectionate touch. God loves everyone, even those who are labelled siigmatizcd, depressed and sin-scarred; he loves us unconditionally. The morning service began with a quote from one of Charles Dick ens' novels. Rev. DeVries began by saying “These are the best of times, these are the worst of times.” With all the bankruptcy, unemployment and lack of government services one would be inclined to agree. The sermon title was “Good News for Tough Times” with scripture taken from Matthew 3: 13-17 and the text II Cor. 13: 14. The summary of the sermon was that our Triune God brings hope and strength through difficult times. The hymn of dedication was No. 380, “Amazing Grace” with Angela Verburg as organist. The devil tempted Jesus, first, after he had spent 40 days and 40 nights in the wilderness. He said, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to be made into bread”. Jesus knew that it was merely a physical temptation and answered the devil saying “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God”. He knew that if a person is to truly live, he needs to follow God's commands, know his will and be in his care. The second temptation occurred when the devil took Jesus up on a mountain and said “I will give you all the kingdoms, everything you see, and all this power if you wor ship me.” But Jesus answered say ing “Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.” Jesus lived by these words and he prayed constantly. He knew that all the splendour in the world can not fill one's needs. Only by following and serving God can a person receive happiness because all earth ly things will pass away. Rev. Ramirez said, true power comes from submission to God's will and from meditating on his word. The devil tempted Jesus further by taking him up to the pinnacle of a temple in Jerusalem and said, “If you are the son of God, throw your self down and the angels will lift you up. Jesus answered saying “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Jesus did not choose his will over his Father's. Many more tempta tions were to follow Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane and later on the cross, but he was able to over come them. Rev. Ramirez said that, we too are faced with many of the same temptations in our daily life but if we follow Jesus' example, slay strong and learn God's will we loo can overcome them.
