The Citizen, 1992-03-11, Page 13Blyth Atoms win WOAA Start OMHA playoffs After capturing the WOAA Championship, Thursday night, against Clifford, the Blyth Atoms faced their first competitors for the OMHA Championship. The first game was held in Cayu ga, Sunday, March 8. This game proved to be nothing short of excit ing. Cayuga demonstrated their abili ties in the first minute of the game, when they made four attempts to open the score, but to no avail. Blyth took the lead by scoring the first two goals of the game. At 12:44, Jeff Cowan opened the game, assisted by Darryl Bromley. Then, at the 4:01 mark, Bromley was assisted by Michael Haggitt. With their great technique in pass ing, they had the goalie totally con fused, even though he had stopped numerous attempts beforehand. Cayuga came too close for com fort, when the puck went into Blyth's net... fortunately, the whis tle had been blown because the ref eree had lost sight of the puck. With only 35 seconds remaining in the first period, Cayuga got on the board, to close the gap 2-1 in Blyth's favour. Cayuga outshot Blyth 17-6 in the first period. The second period saw Cayuga make a great comeback, thanks to number 12, Jason Baird. He scored four consecutive goals, to put them ahead 5-2. Again, while under pressure, Blyth never gave up hope. At 2:17, Michael Haggitt earned an unas sisted goal on a breakaway - this time it was No. 12 for Blyth who did the scoring. The second period resulted in a 5-3 game, with Cayuga outshooting Blyth by a mere 13-12 margin. Both teams returned to the dress ing rooms, for a rest and coaching. Cayuga extended their lead at 11:35 of the third period, to put them ahead 6-3. Obviously, Blyth had decided enough is enough. They scored the next three goals to bring it to a 6-6 tie. The first goal was made at the 7:29 mark by Darryl Bromley, assisted by Michael Haggitt, when Blyth was shorthanded. The next goal happened at 5:58, done by Michael Courtney, with the aid of Haggitt and Corey Shannon. The score was now 6-5 in Cayuga's favour. The tying goal was made with only 48 seconds remaining in the game, just as a Cayuga player had stepped back onto the ice after serving a two minute penalty for tripping. Cayuga's key player, Jason Baird, was winding up to take a shot, when goalie, Scott Bromley poke- checked the puck out to Mike Hag gitt, who then fled up the ice to score the lying goal. Bromley earned an assist, his second of the year. (Cayuga's goalie had also earned an assist on he fourth goal). The game was now forced into ten minutes overtime. Both teams were able to take a five-minute breather. The goalies remained in the net they were already in. Blyth took the lead at the 7:51 mark. Jeff Cowan was assisted by Darryl Bromley, to give Blyth a 7-6 lead. Then, only 9 seconds later, Blyth extended their lead, thanks to Jeff Cowan and Michael Haggitt, at the 7:02 mark. For the next five minutes, the puck was taken from end to end, with numerous attempts displayed by both teams. In the last minute of the period, more stress was pul onto Blyth when Cayuga pulled their goal tender, allowing them to have another forward. With only 16 sec onds remaining, they scored, clos ing the lead to 8-7 for Blyth. The last few seconds seemed forever, but, fortunately, the whistle blew and Blyth had captured the opening game by an 8-7 margin. Cayuga outshot Blyth in the game by a 53-54 margin. The next game is scheduled in Blyth Arena on Saturday, March 14, at 4:30 p.m. Please come out to support the Blyth Atoms, who are involved in the All Ontario Championship. Under the strong support of their coaches, Gary Courtney and Steve Howson, assistant coach, the team is having an excellent season. The team consists of: Michael Haggitt (C), Jeff Cowan (A), Michael Ans ley (A), Darryl Bromley, Amanda Anderson, Michael Courtney, Chris Carter, Jamie Black, Trevor Wil son, Corey Shannon and Scott Bromley.
