That sound you heard last Tuesday night was the sound of Blyth village councillors pulling the purse strings tight. Councillors turned down two requests for grants and gave an indication there is going to be care ful bargaining when council meets tonight (Wednesday) with employ ees for wage negotiations. Council voted against giving a donation to support the Vanastra Recreation Centre even though there was some sympathy for the position of Tuckersmith township taxpayers who are having to pick up the annual deficit (which ran to $44,977 last year) for the indoor pool. Figures presented in the request for a grant showed that only 14.6 per cent of the users of the pool come from Tuckersmith while the rest come from across Huron coun ty. Figures showed that 84 people from Blyth used the pool last year (5.97 per cent of total use). There were 12 tables in play at the weekly euchre in Blyth on Feb. 24. Winners were: high lady, Lillian Appleby; high man, Len Shob- brook; low lady, Grace Cartwright; low man, Ted East; ladies' lone hands, Alberta Stevens; men's lone hands, Walter Pepper and special Nora Kelly. Mr. and Mrs. Lome Daer and Jason visited with Mr. and Mrs. Bert Daer on Saturday, Feb. 22. Visiting the Daers on Sunday, Feb. 23 were Mr. and Mrs. Milford Doerr of Stratford. "It would be a shock to me if I was sitting in a community like Tuckersmith and found out we were only using 14 per cent (of the total usage)," Councillor John Elliott said. Reeve Dave Lee pointed out that many people in Blyth do make use of the pool. Helen Grubb, clerk treasurer, pointed out that the coun ty's community development committees are trying to promote what facilities the county has to try to bring people into the county. It would be a shame to lose them, she said. But Councillor Robbie Lawrie argued that the cost of keeping up some of the facilities can eventual ly catch up with a community. "You can be facility poor," he said in moving to file the request. Coun cillor Steven Sparling seconded the motion. He said it's easy to make a comparison between the Vanastra pool and local arenas but in the case of the arenas, those who are providing financial support also get a say in the operation of the facility through having representatives on the board. Councillors also turned down a request for a grant from the Huron County Junior Farmers who will be hosting the Provincial Culturama at Blyth Memorial Hall, April 11. About 250 people will spend the weekend in Blyth and area for one act plays, public speaking, slide shows and arts and crafts. The group asked for a donation to help offset expenses. When someone suggested that the group might be looking for a break on the rent of the hall, councillors reacted nega tively, feeling they had an expen sive facility to run and must maintain the rental schedule to try to pay the bills. In preparation for tonight's meet ing with employees about wage negotiations, Councillor Elliott ask to be provided with background information on what wage changes have been since 1988 on. Usually, Mrs. Grubb pointed out, only the last couple of years background are included but Councillor Elliott felt he needed figures for the entire last term of council. di YTUI PRINTING INC.
