Crusaders rebound to tie series with Kincardine The Crusaders opened their play­ offs on Friday night when they travelled to Kincardine for a game with the Kings. The Kings opened the scoring in the first minute of play. Brussels tied the game at one, six minutes later when Ken Higgins drew the only assist on a goal by Chris King. Kincardine came back with another goal before the period ended to take a 2-1 first period lead. The second period was a minute and and half old when the Cru­ saders tied the game at two when Tim Fritz scored a power play goal with J. C. Hewitt and Higgins drawing assists on the play. Brus­ sels took the lead for the first time with under six minutes left in the period when Brian Campbell drew an assist on a goal scored by Ron Stromc. Blyth Atoms swamp Hensall 10-2 Blyth Atoms slaughtered the vis­ iting Hensall team in WOAA semi­ final action on Feb. 20 by a score of 10-2. With just under three minutes left in the first period Jeff Cowan opened the scoring off an assist from Mike Ansley, then came back with one minute left off a pass from Darryl Bromley to give the Blyth team a two goal edge. The Hensall team got the first goal of the second period, but Mike Haggitt, assisted by Mike Courtney widened the margin just two min­ utes later. Then just 20 seconds later Darryl Bromley scored from Jeff Cowan and Chris Carter, giv­ ing the Blyth team a commanding lead. Blyth eventually tied the contest with a lucky break as Michael Bromley notched the hat-trick, while playing two men short, Bromley let go a harmless shot from the blue line that hit a Zurich defender and deflected past a sur­ prised goalie. Any advantage Blyth now had quickly evaporated as Zurich coun­ tered with two quick goals to once again take the lead. Two more Zurich goals in the third was the difference as they humbled Blyth 8-4. Included in the goals were three Zurich powerplay goals. Game number four of the series was played in Zurich on Feb. 23, with Blyth hoping to win the series and Zurich attempting to even the series at two games each. Zurich got their wish as they notched a fluke short-handed goal with only 23 seconds left in the game to shade Blyth 5-4. Blyth took 2-0 and 4-2 leads in the con­ test only to watch Zurich claw their way back to set up the late game heroics. Brian McNichol, Peter Craig, Michael Bromley and Christopher Howson were the Blyth marksmen while Jerrod But­ ton, Tim Lyons, Michael deJong and Ryan Chamney each had a sin­ gle assist. Mike Courtney came back in the third to score the team's eighth goal from Mike Haggitt and Amanda Anderson. The Blyth team showed the struggling Hensall team no mercy scoring two more goals before the period was over. Jeff Cowan slammed home the ninth goal unas­ sisted, then Jeff Cowan made the pass to Chris Carter who scored the final goal with 4:39 remaining. The second game of the series will be played against Clifford on Thursday night, (Feb. 27) at 7 in Blyth.
