Nevills had a busy night as the Bulls took control of the game early and kept the heat on to down Grand Valley 10-2 . Bulls charge toward finals If you are looking for a sure bet ... take the Brussels Bulls and Hanover Barons in the Western Junior C finals. Both teams have commanding 3-0 leads in their respective semi-final series. Hanover leads the Mount Forest Patriots, and Brussels took care of the Grand Valley Harvesters. The Bulls opened their series by Hammering Grand Valley 10-2. Steve Fritz and Greg Vader led the way with three goals each. Todd Norman, Jason Baier, Brad Carter and Jason McNichol rounded out the scoring. League scoring champ Glen Watt had both Harvesters' goals. Coach Scott Pettigrew said, “It was probably one of our best games offensively all season. We took control earlier with some strong forechecking and our attack had a good flow to it.” Saturday night was dominated by special teams. The Bulls beat the Harvesters 7-4. Seven of the 11 goals came on the power play, and one was into an empty net. Brad Carter paced the Bulls with two goals and two assists. Carter's goals came in an 8-second span in the Zurich makes comeback to tie series with Blyth BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Bantams continued their playoff series with Zurich last week, winning once, then losing twice as Zurich evened the series at two wins each. Blyth took a 2-0 series lead, with a solid two-way game in Blyth on Feb. 17, with a 4-1 win. Michael Bromley scored the only first period goal on a nifty break­ away after being set up by Peter Craig and Ryan Chamney. Bromley upped the score to 2-0 midway through the second as the Zurich goalie juggled his shot before watching it drop into the net. Thirty-five seconds later Benjie Hakkers gave Blyth a 3-0 lead after some persistent forechecking and assists by linemates, Jonathan Collins and Tim Cowan. Although Zurich finally ended Chris Lee's shutout bid with one and a half minutes left in the game, Jerrod Button salted the victory away with an empty net goal. Christopher Howson and Michael first minute of the second period. Greg McNevan had three goals, Jeff McKee had two. McKee and McNevan scored 21 seconds apart in the third to break a 4-all tie. Mike Hastie had three for Grand Valley. Netminder Jeff Roy had an excellent game for the Bulls. Jamie Hislop was the hero on Sunday. He scored the winner with a little better than two minutes left in the third to give the Bulls a 3-2 win and a 3-0 lead in the series. Brad Carter and Ted Sills gave the Bulls a 2-0 lead after two. But goals by Glenn Watt and Peter Israel tied it up. Actually, the Bulls Jason Baier scored the first goal for Grand Valley. His attempt to clear the puck around the boards ended up behind a surprised Bulls netminder Jeff Roy. The Harvesters had their chances late in the third. The Bulls were shorthanded in the deJong assisted on the empty netter with five seconds remaining to give Blyth a 4-1 win. Blyth hosted game three on Feb. 22 hoping for a series' sweep. Unfortunately an emotionless first period and an undisciplined second frame by the Blyth squad carried Zurich to an 8-4 humbling of the home team. Zurich enjoyed a 3-0 first period lead and increased the lead to 4-1 early in he second before Blyth mounted a mini-comeback. Michael Bromley's power play goal finally got Blyth on the board early in the second, assisted by Ryan Chamney and Tim Lyons. Ar end-to-end rush by Peter Craig ended in a wrap around shot by Craig to the goalie's stick side, cut­ ting Zurich's lead to 4-2 a short time later. Luckily just a bad bruise. Hanover has beat Mt Forest 7-3, 6-4 and 5-1. That series continues. In their opening game the Overloads downed Wellesley by the score of 4 - 3. Wayne McDougall scored all four Blyth goals. In their second game the Overloads used a strong defensive effort and outstanding goaltending to defeat Wellesley No. 2 by the score of 3-0. The third game found the Blyth team against Mitchell. The Overloads, already guaranteed a spot in the finals, played poorly and fell to defeat by a score of 7-0. Barney Stewart scored twice and singles went to Wayne McDougall, Gary Courtney and Murray Black. Harry Wilson and Ron Ritchie shared the goaltending throughout the Tournament and both were solid.
