Bulls charge toward finals
If you are looking for a sure bet
... take the Brussels Bulls and
Hanover Barons in the Western
Junior C finals. Both teams have
commanding 3-0 leads in their
respective semi-final series.
Hanover leads the Mount Forest
Patriots, and Brussels took care of
the Grand Valley Harvesters.
The Bulls opened their series by
Hammering Grand Valley 10-2.
Steve Fritz and Greg Vader led the
way with three goals each. Todd
Norman, Jason Baier, Brad Carter
and Jason McNichol rounded out
the scoring. League scoring champ
Glen Watt had both Harvesters'
goals.
Coach Scott Pettigrew said, “It
was probably one of our best games
offensively all season. We took
control earlier with some strong
forechecking and our attack had a
good flow to it.”
Saturday night was dominated by
special teams. The Bulls beat the
Harvesters 7-4. Seven of the 11
goals came on the power play, and
one was into an empty net. Brad
Carter paced the Bulls with two
goals and two assists. Carter's goals
came in an 8-second span in the
Zurich makes comeback
to tie series with Blyth
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Bantams continued
their playoff series with Zurich last
week, winning once, then losing
twice as Zurich evened the series at
two wins each.
Blyth took a 2-0 series lead, with
a solid two-way game in Blyth on
Feb. 17, with a 4-1 win.
Michael Bromley scored the only
first period goal on a nifty break
away after being set up by Peter
Craig and Ryan Chamney.
Bromley upped the score to 2-0
midway through the second as the
Zurich goalie juggled his shot
before watching it drop into the net.
Thirty-five seconds later Benjie
Hakkers gave Blyth a 3-0 lead after
some persistent forechecking and
assists by linemates, Jonathan
Collins and Tim Cowan.
Although Zurich finally ended
Chris Lee's shutout bid with one
and a half minutes left in the game,
Jerrod Button salted the victory
away with an empty net goal.
Christopher Howson and Michael
first minute of the second period.
Greg McNevan had three goals,
Jeff McKee had two. McKee and
McNevan scored 21 seconds apart
in the third to break a 4-all tie.
Mike Hastie had three for Grand
Valley. Netminder Jeff Roy had an
excellent game for the Bulls. He
stopped 47 of 51 shots.
“We had a short bench and our
line combinations were messed up
a bit They play better at home and
got a couple of bounces scoring
two from behind the net, so
generally I was happy with our
performance,” said Pettigrew.
Jamie Hislop was the hero on
Sunday. He scored the winner with
a little better than two minutes left
in the third to give the Bulls a 3-2
win and a 3-0 lead in the series.
Brad Carter and Ted Sills gave
the Bulls a 2-0 lead after two. But
goals by Glenn Watt and Peter
Israel tied it up. Actually, the Bulls
Jason Baier scored the first goal for
Grand Valley. His attempt to clear
the puck around the boards ended
up behind a surprised Bulls
netminder Jeff Roy. The Harvesters
had their chances late in the third.
The Bulls were shorthanded in the
deJong assisted on the empty netter
with five seconds remaining to give
Blyth a 4-1 win.
Blyth hosted game three on Feb.
22 hoping for a series' sweep.
Unfortunately an emotionless first
period and an undisciplined second
frame by the Blyth squad carried
Zurich to an 8-4 humbling of the
home team.
Zurich enjoyed a 3-0 first period
lead and increased the lead to 4-1
early in he second before Blyth
mounted a mini-comeback.
Michael Bromley's power play
goal finally got Blyth on the board
early in the second, assisted by
Ryan Chamney and Tim Lyons. Ar
end-to-end rush by Peter Craig
ended in a wrap around shot by
Craig to the goalie's stick side, cut
ting Zurich's lead to 4-2 a short
time later.
Michael Bromley inched Blyth to

final minute and then Captain Joe
Walker got caught using an illegal
stick. That meant Grand Valley had
six skaters with their goalie on the
bench to the Bulls three, but
Brussels managed to hang on for
the victory.

four goes Thursday night in Grand
Valley at 8:30. Game five if
necessary will be back in Brussels
at 9 p.m.
Rookie Todd Norman was taken
to the Hospital after Saturday
night's game after being slashed in
the back of the leg. Luckily just a
bad bruise.
Hanover has beat Mt Forest 7-3,
6-4 and 5-1. That series continues.
