WHAT A PUZZLE! by Christina Black and April Van Amersfoort Last week, six students from Lhe grade six class at B.P.S. were working on an Enrichment Program Continued on page 21 MVCA says water quality program well received Farmers and local landowners in the Maitland River watershed have responded enthusiastically to the CURB (Clean Up Rural Beaches) Program, offered through the Mail land Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA). Under this program, farmers can apply for financial assistance to clean up sources of bacterial water pollution on their farm. Grants are also available for the repair of faulty septic systems which are polluting watercourses. “We've had over 125 inquiries, mostly from farmers interested in improving their manure facilities to control barnyard run-off,” noted Anne Loeffler, Rural Water Quality Technician for the MVCA. Grants are also available for milkhouse washwater disposal sys tems, as well as fencing projects and stream crossings to keep live stock out of creeks and rivers. Financial assistance is limited to those applicants who are presently impacting water quality. Funding priority will be given to most pro jects with the greatest potential for improving water quality. Anyone wishing more information and application forms should contact the MVCA at 335-3557. Cottage owners along the Lake Huron shoreline may also be eligi ble for grants to repair faulty septic systems to reduce bacterial pollu tion at the beach. The goal of the CURB program is to improve water quality at the swimming beaches on Lake Huron and throughout the Maitland River watershed. In the past, many sources of bacterial pollution were identified, including sewage treat ment plant discharges, barnyard run-off, manure spills and many others. However, the CURB study, completed by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority in 1989, indicated that the most common source of bacterial pollution is faulty septic systems. Bacterial pollution is common in the Maitland River. Between 1986 and 1988, about 2,500 water sam ples were taken by MVCA staff. Only 20 percent met government standards for surface water quality. About 80 percent of the samples indicated that the water was not safe for drinking or swimming. The presence of fecal bacteria does not change the appearance of water, but it does pose an immedi ate health hazard if the water is used for drinking of swimming. Waterborne infections include stomach flu and diarrhea. Eye, ear and throat infections can also occur. Cattle watering in the river can also be infected with disease causing organisms from upstream herds. The CURB Program is funded by the Ministry of the Environment and the Maitland Valley Conserva tion Authority.
