The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Rob Demeray, and followed by the 'loyal toast' led by Toastmaster Frank Procter. Toastmasters was originally founded by Ralph Smedley in 1905 "to help people learn to communi cate effectively". They believe everyone is born with a large amount of talent and potential. To unleash this potential, Toastmasters encourages learning by active par ticipation. An example of which was a seg ment entitled 'Table Topics’. For mer Past President Allan Dettweiler started off a group of guest speak ers and participants from the audi ence in a rap fashion recital of Dr. Seuss' 'Horton Hears A Who'. Allan Director Bev Dawson ^hai^^ THE BEST PLACE FOR FAST RESULTS i Bluevale minister writes book A former United Church minister at Bluevale and Whitechurch, Rev. Wilena Brown is gaining new recognition as an author. Miss Brown has written a book, "Rays of Dawn: Locating Hope in the Rural Situation", drawing upon her expe riences in the rural ministries she has served. The book will be published in the spring by the United Church Pub lishing House, and Miss Brown will also have an article appearing in the February issue of The United Church Observer. Miss Brown was ordained in 1953 by the Maritime Conference, beginning her ministry in Consort, Alberta, where she also did pastoral care at the community hospital. In the 1950's, she also served as min ister of education at Robertson Church in Edmonton, where she later became assistant minister. After receiving two Master's degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey in the early sixties, Miss Brown served part-time at Forest Hill United Church and at the General Council offices in Toronto. In 1975, Miss Brown came to Bluevale, serving the Bluevale and Whitechurch congregations for four years. From there, she served the Varna-Goshen charge near Bay- field for seven years. In 1986, Miss Brown became minister of the Millbank-Hampstead charge. Due to health problems, Miss Brown recently retired from the ministry and makes her home at Albright Gardens in Beamsville. ■ i 1 k AB WHIUIRAD12V • I 5l1 W 11 Iw
