Bulls' Todd Norman named top rookie in Western Jr. C league The Brussels Bulls wrapped up the Western Junior C schedule with a pair of ties. That's good, and that's bad. The good part came last Tuesday night in Hanover. The Bulls were missing a handful of key players and held the Barons to a 3-all tie. The bad ... a 5-all tie with Mount Forest on Friday night. Tuesday night's match-up should be a preview of the finals .. a tight checking hard-nosed, low scoring game. The Bulls fell behind 1-0 in the first but by the midway point of the third period had built a 3-2 lead on goals by Jeff McKee, Greg Vader and Corey McKee. However the Barons Joel Lahn fired the equalizer while shorthanded when he jumped on a Bulls giveaway. The Bulls and Barons split the sea son series, each team winning once, and a pair of ties. Friday's effort was not the same. If wasn't for a strong effort in the third period the Bulls would not even have managed the single point. The Patriots held a 3-2 lead Blyth Bantams win exhibition BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Bantams played a sin gle exhibition game last week as they continue to await a playoff opponent. The Exeter “B” team vis ited Blyth on January 27 and Blyth's Chris “Leaky” Lee recorded the shut-out in an 8-0 home team romp. Blyth used the power play to blow the game open early as they scored three man-advantage goals on their way to victory. Michael Bromley led the attack as he scored two goals of his own but impressed Continued on page!9 heading into the final frame but Brussels came roaring back with three goals. However the Bulls short bench began to show late in the game and some mental errors caused some mistakes which allowed Mt. Forest to tie it up with less than five minutes remaining. Jeff McKee paced Brussels with a pair. Jason Baier, Jamie Hislop and Scott Vader had the others. The Junior C Awards banquet was held Saturday night. Bulls cen tre Todd Norman won the rookie of the year award. Glenn Watt of Grand Valley won the scoring title and the league M-V-P. Bruce Angel of Hanover is the top defenceman and Jeff Oestreicher of Walkerton was named the most gentlemanly player. The Bulls open play-offs this weekend against Goderich. The first round series will be a best of five. Game one will likely be in Brussels Friday night at 9 p.m. The Belgrave Novices defeat Clinton dates for playoffs were to be set Monday night at a league meeting. FROM THE BULLSPEN: Miss ing from the game with Hanover were Brad Carter (school), Greg McNevan (school), Dan Burton (work), Jason Baier (suspension). On Friday night not in the lineup were Steve Fritz (school), Brad Carter (school), Dan Burton (work), Ted Sills (injury). Hanover finished in first place losing only twice and setting a new record for goals against with 71. They get a bye in the first round of playoffs and will meet the team with the lowest regular season point total to advance from the first round. Grand Valley clinched third place with a win in its last game of the schedule and will play Wing ham. They may regret it though because in four meetings the two teams tied three with Grand Valley beating the Ironmen only once. Walkerton finished fourth and will play the fifth place Mt. Forest Patriots. Walkerton won three of the four meetings but the scores were close. Heavy pressure in the Clinton end by his teammates helped Bel grave goaltender Aaron Bakker record a shut-out in Novice action Thursday in Belgrave. Belgrave scored twice in the first and twice in the second for a 4-0 win over Clinton. Aaron Himmel man opened the scoring with a goal from Tim Robinson. The second goal of the first period came from Robinson, with Himmelman and Justin Campbell assisting. Aaron Himmelman scored an unassisted goal in the second peri od before Craig Marks closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal.
