IThe news from Compiled by Betty McCall Phone 887-6677 People celebrate birth, birthday Sheila and Doug Cousins, Wood- stock, Mrs. Nancy Ball, Matthew and Alicia of Hanover, Richard and Daniel Anderson, Goderich visited on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Ross Anderson. The gathering was to celebrate their mother's birthday and also the arrival of a new fami­ ly member, Sarah Jean Anderson, born January 24 in Goderich Marine and General Hospital, the daughter of Anne Catherine and Richard, sister for Daniel. Mrs. Elva Jacques visited on Sunday afternoon with her cousins Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse. Visitors on the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grasby were Mr. and Mrs. Gary Leitch, Julie and Jeff of Waterdown, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston, Tara and Erin of Dderton. Mr. and Mrs. George Johnston, Tara and Erin visited with his mother Mrs. Laura Johnston on the weekend. UCW hosts spouses, guests The Belgrave United Church Women along with their husbands and friends sat down to a delicious pot luck supper on January 23 in the Knox United Church school room. There were 51 present. Following the meal a worship service prepared and conducted by Mrs. Marie McIntosh and Mrs. Louise Bosman was held. Karrin Marks favoured with a piano solo. During the business meeting it was decided that the U.C.W. would cater to two country suppers for the Blyth Festival this summer. Arti­ cles will be collected for Goodwill Industries this winter, a definite date and place will be announced in the church bulletin later. Rev. Peter Tucker showed slides and gave an interesting account of his experiences in mission work along the northwest coast of Cana­ da and in Africa. Calendar winners Belgrave Kinsmen Calendar draw winners last week were: Sun­ day, January 26, Corinne Irwin, Belgrave, $50; Monday, January 27, Bill Brown, Wroxeter, $50; Tuesday, January 28, Adrian Van Dyk, Ridgetown, $50; Wednesday, January 29, Rita Ross, Bluevale, $50; Thursday, January 30, Harvey Congram, Point Clarke, $50; Fri­ day, January 31, Gary Lippert, Kin­ cardine, $500. Many snowmobilers took advan­ tage of the perfect day to take in the Poker Rally on Sunday. Registra­ tion was held at the Walton Hall with 567 poker hands sold. First prize $100 went to Mary Ross, Brussels; second prize, $75, Ken McDonald, RR 2, Blyth; third prize, $50, Eldon Chamney, Auburn. Approximately 225 door prizes were given out. Proceeds will go towards the Walton Area Sports Club. 13 tables at Belgrave euchre Thirteen tables were in play at the weekly euchre which was held in the W.I. Hall, Belgrave, Wednesday, January 29. Winners were: high lady, Mrs. Bill Willits; low lady, Mrs. Herb Clayton; most 2's on card, lady, Mrs. Marie Filsinger, lucky chairs, Mrs. Kay McCormick, Bill Willits; high man, Gamer Nicholson; low man, Herb Clayton; most 2's on card, man, George Inglis. There will be euchre again Wednesday, February 5 starting at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Duffs plans annual meeting Rob Parr of Wingham led the worship service Sunday morning at Duffs United, Walton and Bluevale United Churches. Greeters at Walton were Linda McDonald and her children Sarah and Andrew. Worshippers were welcomed by a prelude of music with Margery Huether at the piano, violinist Phyllis Mitchell and organist Glenda Carter. Marie McGavin contributed a solo, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” accompanied by Margery at the piano. JoAnne McDonald was in charge of the children's time speaking on the life of Jeremiah asking “What do people mean when God calls us?” Offering was received by Brian Wilbee and Lav- em Godkin. Mr. Parr spoke on his message, “Stewardship in the BaJ ance”. Note the change of time for the church service at Walton Feb. 9. It will be at 11:30 a.m. when a pot luck lunch will follow. Plans have been made to hold the annual meet­ ing in the afternoon.
