Watch for hiring quotas business people warned A large group of Reform Party members from all municipalities in the riding gathered together in Clinton, on Saturday, November 16. They adopted the Party Consti tution, and elected a board of direc tors comprising of 19 people. The elected executive is: Norm Gurr of Southampton, president; Len Lobb of Clinton, first vice- president; Rob Southwell of Kirk ton, second vice-president; Harry Denhaan of Seaforth, secretary; Paul Bentley of Southampton, trea surer; and Dave Schilbe of Zurich; Frank Stretton of Brussels; and Maggie Visscher of Bayfield. The directors at large are Maude Connon of Exeter, Dave Smith of Huron Park, John Rosenlund of Seaforth, Gary Walden of Clinton, Bob Pawley of Port Elgin, Edith Kammermans of Southampton, Doug Fines of Goderich, Jack Mar- iot of Goderich, Leslie King of Goderich, Mason Bailey of Blyth, and Henry Trickey of Grand Bend. The Party has also established four districts with local councils, centred on Exeter in the south, Clinton, and Wingham in the centre of the riding, and Port Elgin in the north. In addition, committees are being formed in every town in each of the four districts of the riding, in order to assure grass roots input. In the next few months, many information meetings are being planned in all of the towns through out the riding. There will be an information meeting on Monday, February 24, at the Exeter High School at 7:30 p.m. One of the fundamental differ- encess in the Reform Party is the insistence that every Reform Mem ber of Parliament will be required to represent the wishes of the majority of the electors in the rid ing. In other words, the directions provided by the Huron-Bruce elec torate, would be followed in voting on items such as Free Trade, the GST, changes in the constitution, fiscal responsibility, immigration and crime control. By contrast, the elected MPs in the old line parties are required to vote according to directions imposed by the party caucus. The Ontario government's pend ing Employment Equity legislation is certain to mean problems for small business operators, says Human resource specialist Yvonne Fried. Ms. Fried, head of the Kncchtel grocery store chain human resource department gave this warning to more than 90 Huron County busi ness people at a Federal Business Development Bank seminar in Vanastra on January 8. While Ms. Fried's seminar focused on Human Rights in hiring and firing, she predicted that employers will face even greater headaches with the Employment Equity legislation. The NDP bill proposes to set tar gets and goals in public and private businesses to assure employment for more women and minorities. Employment guidelines will be set for certain population areas, and will be based on percentages of women and minority groups. Ms. Fried told her Vanastra audi ence that the government would take an area, like Huron County, Through the Years Continued from page 4 ridge till, mulch till and no till in the interests of soil conservation, as well as for his use of crop rotation and cover crops and his woodlot management system. Blyth council went looking for a new councillor after the resignation and assess the percentage of women, disabled persons and visi ble minorities. In turn, businesses would be required to hire an equiv alent percentage of its staff using these guidelines. “It throws Human Rights out of the window,” Ms. Fried said. “Next you'll be told you don't have enough native employees (for instance) and you'll have to hire a native in spite of the'fact that he may not be best qualified.” Ontario Citizenship Minister Elaine Ziemba has said that compa nies will not be forced to hire quo tas, but regional guidelines must be followed or heavy fines could be charged. Final bill proposals will detail which companies may be subject to the legislation. Initial proposals call for the law to cover all companies with annual payrolls of more than $300,000. The bill may cover com panies with a minimum of 10 employees, or less stringent rules may be applied to small business. Ms. Ziemba hopes to present a draft copy of the bill to the provin cial Legislature this spring. of Tom Cronin. Brussels councillors voted them selves a $100-a-year raise when they adopted a new pay schedule. Robert Hunking of RR1, Auburn was presented with the President's Award for the most outstanding first-year member at the Huron County Junior Farmers' annual awards banquet.
