From the Minister's Study Winter season a time of dormancy BY PASTOR TOM WARNER BRUSSELS MENNONITE FELLOWSHIP As I write this article, our chil dren are at home for the second time from school due to the snow that is common during winter time. It makes me wonder, “What good is the snow?” After all it serves no purpose to the modem world, does it? It makes my drive to the office or other places of employment dangerous. It means I will either lose a day of work and wages or at least fall behind in what my responsibilities are for that day, because I am snowed in and unable to leave home. There are some folk who will become very angry with the snow. But who wants to work all their life away? Who wants to spend all their winter cold and barren of snow? It seems to me that the backbone of our community needs both winter and snow. The family community, the land, the people, the machinery, all deserve time off from work. If the farmer keeps going behind financially just in one growing sea son, how far behind would he be if his growing season were twice as long? A winter season has always been a way of expressing a time of rest, a time of dormancy, a time of death. Without the winter, where would be the warm feelings that come with the spring thaw and the turning over of the earth for plant- Newlyweds cruise Bahamas ing be? This points so beautifully to the deepest part of our being. Inside we feel like it's winter: short days, overcast, coldness, dreariness, death. It was so coincidental or accidental that God raised Jesus from the cold, dark grave of death in the spring of the year. It is true that the seasons reverse for those south of the equator, but the symbolism still applies, for it is only as we see ourselves as in dark ness, dreariness and death that we are able to seek light, liveliness and life in Jesus Christ. For just as God raised Him from physical death to life, so can God raise us from spiri tual, mental and psychological death to new life in the spirit, mind and soul. The promise from God Himself says creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Is it not time that light, liveliness and life comes to your inner per son? God bless you as you seek for the Lord Jesus to become a new person.
