The Citizen, 1992-01-22, Page 9Board of Education briefs THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 1992. PAGE 9. Bd. establishes fund in Dr. Corrin’s name The Huron County Board of Edu cation trustees passed a motion at the January 13 meeting, to establish a memorial fund in honour of Dr. M.H. Corrin, respected Lucknow physician. The Lucknow Lions, on behalf of the late Dr. Corrin, presented cheques in the amount of $5,000 to establish a student award at F. E. Madill Secondary School. The exact criteria for an award to be made to a graduating student resid ing within the historical Lucknow High School area and progressing to further education in a field of medical science are being estab lished. The terms and conditions for the selection of the award winners and distribution of investment income will be reviewed and endorsed by the Supervisor of Financial Ser vices to verify their manageability. *** Role models support anti-drug campaign continued from page 8 discouraging discrimination, mini mizing superfluous academic stress and generally providing a healthy environment. Committee member Mary Mof fatt says we know that a good self concept, positive role models and a local community that promotes a healthy environment are factors in the success of our "say no to drugs" campaign. Remember, if our kids don't start, stopping is no problem. In a recorded vote the trustees ratified a tentative agreement with Canada Union of Public Employees 13 to two. Trustee John Jewitt spoke against the move, saying that there had been no improvement in the eco nomic climate since the contract talks last year. Past Chair Joan Van Den Broeck, said, however, that the board was legislated to pass the motion in “light of the legal requirements of the government's pay equity poli cy.” Trustee Bob Heywood also opposed the motion. One trustee, Allan Carter declared a conflict of interest. *** The firm of Donnelly and Mur phy has been retained as solicitors for HCBE for this term. ♦** The board voted to re-appoint the firm of Kyles, Garratt and Markle- vitz as consulting architects for the term of the board. *** The trustees accepted the propos al from MacNab Bus Sales with a tender price of $163,170.90, for the purchase of three new school buses, subject to grant approval by the Ministry of Education. It was noted that in previous years the board has replaced four or five buses each year, but due to the revised bus routes is only purchas ing three.*** The tender from J&J Contract ing, Bayfield, in the amount of $133,000 for alterations and addi tions to Goderich District Colle giate Institute in the form of a three-classroom addition was accepted. *** Several committee appointments were made. Liliane Nolan and Joan van Den Broeck will serve on the Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils Committee. Mrs. Van Den Broeck is the dele gate as well to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association, while Roxanne Brown is the alternate. Bob Burton, Jim Chapman and Della Baumgarten are the trustees appointed to the Staff Improvement Plan Committees. Mrs. Van Den Broeck was appointed to the Huron Health and Social Services Liaison Committee. Rick Rompf was selected to serve on the Huron Health and Safety Committee as well as the Huron Industrial Training Advisory Committee. The board passed a recommenda tion stating that as it is necessary to borrow $25,000,000 until the cur rent revenue has been received to meet its current expenditures, it will borrow from the Bank of Mon treal by way of a promissory note. However, prior to passing the motion, Trustee John Jewitt sug gested the administration should shop around. “It might be timely to go to the market and see if maybe we can do better,” he said. “We should ask other institutions what their rates might be.” Director of Education Bob Allan told the trustees that passing the motion would not preclude them from looking elsewhere and that should they find an institution offering a better interest rate anoth er motion could be brought for ward. *** The Executive Committee brought forward a recommendation to the board asking that the 1992 estimates be developed to reflect contracts and commitments within each committee mandate using a guideline of a maximum increase of zero percent. Special projects for inclusion in the estimates are to be brought for ward as separate items for consid eration by the board. Trustees were told by Mr. Allan that in passing the recommendation they were not making any hard and fast rules that would place them in a difficult position at budget setting time. “It's strictly a guideline and does not define future actions,” he said.
