Looking Back Through the Years ONE YEAR AGO JANUARY 16,1991 Paul and Jacquie Gowing of Brussels were the parents of the first baby bom at Listowel Memo­ rial Hospital. Benjamin Alexander Gowing arrived at 10:23 a.m. on January 1. Over 100 snowmobilers partici­ pated in the Brussels-Walton Trail­ blazers poker rally. Charlie Shaw of the Blyth Lions Club was honoured for his long ser­ vice as Youth Exchange Officer for District A-9. Kristin Byatt, a youth exchange student from Australia presented Mr. Shaw with his plaque. East Wawanosh council decided not go ahead with their plan to build a new office contingent in conjunction with the Belgrave Kinsmen's proposal to rebuild the front of the Community Centre. Members of F.E. Madill's track and field team participated at the Hamilton Spectator Indoor Games, along with athlete Ben Johnson. The triumph of the day was the Midget Girls relay 4x1 lap. Angie Yoon of Brussels and Natasha Muschied, Julie Lisle and Ibukum Omole all of Wingham ran the event in front of 17,000 people. The finished with a silver medal. Blyth council decided that pri­ vate drain problems will be looked after by the property owners involved. THREE YEARS AGO JANUARY 11,1989 The newly-renovated Brussels Legion was officially opened with tribute being paid to the enormous community spirit making it pos­ sible, just seven months after it was gutted in a disastrous fire. Close to 200 people were present for the event. World War I veteran Comrade Fred Thuell, had the hon­ our of cutting the ribbon. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse of Belgrave were honoured in recognition of 25 years as treasur­ ers of the Belgrave Pastoral Charge service Knox United and Calvin- Brick. Mrs. Sara Anderson donated an electrically-illuminated cross to Knox United, Belgrave, in memory of the late Earl Anderson. Lisa Rammeloo of Blyth was the recipient of the President's Award for the Most Enthusiastic First Year Member of the Huron County Junior Farmers. FIVE YEARS AGO JANUARY 14,1987 Two local figure skating pairs scored successes at the Central Canadian Divisional Figure Skating Competition in Brandon, Manitoba. Kevin Wheeler of Brussels and his partner Michelle Menzies of Preston placed first in both their compulsory and free skating pro­ grams to win the gold medal in the Junior Free Skating Pairs competi­ tion. In the Novice Dance category, Peter MacDonald of RR3, Brussels and Kerrie Shepherd of RR1, BLyth placed second among the nine dance teams entered to win the silver medal. Blyth figure skaters and hockey and broomball players were pray­ ing for cold weather after a break­ down at the ice plant at the Community Centre. The brine chiller, a major compo­ nent of the artificial ice plant broke down at the same time that a rare mild January occurred. Arena oper­ ations came to a virtual standstill. Huron County Council autho­ rized the construction of a new bridge to replace the historic 102- year-old Ball's Bridge, located across the Maitland River. Presentation This year, in an effort to increase pledges for Easter Seals, the Bruce Regional Snowmobile Association sponsored a Media Challenge Cup. Area papers, television and radio stations were encouraged to get sponsors and participate in the run, which was held on Sunday in Brussels. The winner was The Citizen and BRSA Secretary Henry Armstrong presents staff member Bonnie Gropp with the Media Challenge Award.
