Co-op students learn through hands-on experience Every year, secondary school stu dents are given an opportunity, through cooperative education pro grams, to learn by "hands-on" experience more about the profes sional field they hope to pursue. Four Brussels students involved in the program at F.E. Madill in Wingham, told what they are gain ing through co-op. Patty Knight is working at C.A.M.C. Bookkeeping and Income Tax Services in Wing ham. There she is learning comput er work and manual work, as well as source document manual ledger entry, which consists of entering every transaction of the business into a ledger book. Patty says that though this may sound boring, she realizes it is very necessary to know in order to go on with other elements in the accounting cycle. Also, it enables her to get to know the intricate details of running the business by analyzing each transac tion. Patty has been working with computer software, something she says that is fairly new to her, though it is becoming obvious how the computer and new software have become a very prominent part of this field. Patty Knight Steve McCutcheon Steve McCutcheon's co-op place ment is at CKNX in Wingham, where he works in the television studio. He is, he says, basically watching and listening to what goes on at a television station. Bobbijo Rutledge has been given the chance, through co-op to work with developmentally challenged adults at the Community Living Association. Every other day, she spends three hours working with the people at the centre. It is something, she says, she looks forward to very much. As well, she said, it leaves her feeling satisfied, when she sees the that she has helped someone accomplish steps toward indepen dence. Her job, primarily, is to spend one-on-one quality time, which may mean simply going for a walk or taking someone shopping."Not only do I learn more about the peo ple, but they leam more about me and we grow to know and trust each other," says Bobbijo. Michelle MachanE—Ttie news from Bobbijo Rutledge For Michelle Machan, every day at the Wingham Day Centre is a new adventure. "Once I walk in and see the smiling faces it makes me feel special and needed," she says. Some of the children, she said, just need someone to sit and help them do a puzzle or read them a favourite book. "I also see them learning something new every day." All four young people see the co op program as a very worthwhile experience. "I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity to work in an environment that is filled with enthusiasm and many chances to leam," said Bobbijo. "not only has it given me hands on experience, it has helped me decide this is the career I want to pursue."
