Santa’s Workshop open for business Wayne Lowe of Brussels has always loved children, so when lhe call came in from Santa, some 15 years ago, for volunteers to help during his busiest time of the year, Wayne was quick to apply. His duties back then, were much the same as those of other Santa clones — taking part in parades, meeting children and dispersing candies and gifts at festive gather ings, with the odd "Ho, Ho Ho", thrown in for good measure. Three years ago, however, Brus sels' resident St. Nick, came up with the idea of opening his own workshop during the season so lit tle ones could have an extra oppor tunity to whisper their Christmas wishes. As the electric train whirs 'round the track, its whistle blowing to the accompaniment of Christmas songs, Santa holds court for his many tiny visitors, from babies to - 10-ycar-olds. How long he spends with each child depends, he says, on how long the line is, but he likes to spend at least five minutes with a youngster. After chatting with Santa, every child goes away with a small treat. Though over the years the major ity of requests have been fairly pre dictable, depending on the latest toy trends, Santa does recall one child asking him for a real heli copter, adding, with a chuckle, that he's pretty sure, this was one Christmas wish that wasn't filled. While it does mean some person al sacrifice to be a representative of Father Christmas, for this particular Santa it comes with its share of rewards. "Just to see a smile on a child's face is enough for me," he says. A moments rest Santa takes a well deserved rest for a few minutes in his Brussels Workshop. For three nights, he held court for the small children in the area, who took the opportunity to come and tell Santa how good they've been and share their Christmas wishes. To ensure a safe trip, the Ontario Provincial Police is recom mending motorists carry several important items with them. To prevent a rear-wheel-drive car from becoming stuck in the snow, a bag of sand could be placed in the trunk to improve traction. To help free a stuck vehicle, sand, rock salt, kilty litter or ashes, from a container in lhe trunk, could be sprinkled in front of the drive wheels to allow the tires to grip the surface. A piece of carpet or a car floor mat could also be used to keep lhe tires from spinning in lhe snow or on ice. Other cold weather travel aids can be found around the home. They include: a blanket, an old jacket, gloves, bools, matches and an empty coffee can to hold a can dle for warmth. need help. In addition, a driver should carry a snow brush, an ice scraper, extra windshield washer fluid, battery booster cables, a first aid kit, and emergency warning triangles, flares or lights. In the days prior to a trip, the OPP recommends that a car be checked for maximum operating efficiency to reduce the risk of the driver being stranded. And while travelling, the gas tank should be kept at least half-full to limit condensation in the gas line and to provide reserve fuel to keep the engine running in an emergen cy. A driver may find fewer service stations open during certain days and nights of the holiday period, so should plan fuel purchases accord ingly. COOP We re pleased to be of service to you.
