During this time, some of the 17 agencies have received word of cuts in govern ment funding, making the need for money from other sources more urgent. Campaign development worker, Glen Sauve of Blyth notes that “response has been excellent where ever allowed in to conduct a full campaign, or where represented by good, active canvassers.” He went on to say people are prepared to respond if given the opportunity. A feature story in Focus Maga zine highlighting each of the partic ipating agencies resulted in a Majestic WI holds Christmas dinner A pot luck meal was how the Majestic Women's Institute opened their meeting on December 11 with twenty-three ladies attending. Hostessing the meal were Verna Tunney, Kate Wilson and Leona Connelley. Alice Brothers and Freda Pipe played lovely duets on the piano prior to the opening of the meeting. President Leona Armstrong opened the meeting with a poem, “A Gift For You”. In the correspondence was an invitation to Gorrie's 90th Anniver sary on January 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. A discussion was held on the child care survey with members agreeing that the rules and regulations should be different from city to rural. Twenty new inserts are to be ordered for the blue handbooks. The committee in charge of the January 7 card party is Yvonne Knight, Margaret MacLeod, Doris McCall and Marie McTaggart. The shut-in boxes were to be packed Monday, Dec. 16 at the Senior Citizens in the Common room at 10 a.m. Roll call was a three dollar donation to underprivi leged children instead of a gift exchange. Once again, Alice Brothers and Freda Pipe entertained by playing the piano. Jane De Vries read a story of an orphaned girl who had only a grandmother as family and how even without money you have many gifts to offer. Margaret MacLeod lead the members in a sing-song. She sang a few songs solo with her delightful voice. Leona Connelley played Santa by handing out the gifts from Secret Sunshine Sisters. Happy Birthday was sung to members. The members adjourned by singing, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to each other. Next meeting will be January 8 at 2 p.m. in the Brussels Library. Cook's Ltd. was first of the mark, doubling its target. Initial reports from three of the 17 can vassers at Champion Machinery of Goderich show that company has already reached one-quarter of its goal. The Bruce Nuclear Power Plant, where Huron County resi dents account for between 30-40 per cent of employees, is accepting payroll deduction for the Huron United Way. Some industries have asked per mission to conduct their campaign in January 1992 appeal, in order to do a proper job. Although all results are not yet in, donations from the professional and educational groups are less than originally hoped for. Staff from the Huron United Way office in Clinton have talked to ser vice clubs and appeared in Santa Claus parades, opening the door to the retail business campaigns which are continuing in urban areas.
