Since January of this year when GST came into effect the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Cen tre and the Blyth District Commu nity Centre, have, in addition to paying ice time, paid the seven per cent tax on top. Rhonda Fischer, treasurer of Brussels Minor Sports, said she attended a GST seminar recently and learned there is absolutely no way for the club to get out of pay ing the tax on ice rental. Mrs. Fis cher explained that if the sports club was incorporated with the municipalities instead of operating separately it would be eligible to get back 57.14 percent. Treasurer of the Blyth organiza tion, Sharcn Wilson, said that both the figure skating club and minor hockey have been gathering infor mation, to see if there is any way to change the system. Registration is not taxed, as it is a service to minors. Mrs. Wilson says, that being the case, it should be consid ered that it is minors using the ice. From July of 1990 to July of 1991 minor hockey ice rental fig ures for the arena in Brussels came to $1,941.22, part of which was GST. In October of this year, which Mrs. Fischer said should be a fairly light month compared to the remainder, there were 47 hours of ice time rented at a cost of $2,350, plus $164.50 GST for a total of $2,514.50. Mrs. Wilson said that for the three months of hockey season, after GST came into effect, it cost the Blyth organization an additional $360.85. For October of this year, there has been $122.32 paid in GST. An addition the Blyth Figure Skating Club paid $154.70 in GST for the first three months of this year, according to Treasurer Diane Ferguson. "It is taking a lot of vol unteer dollars," she said. GST has been figured into the fees and equipment purchases and Mrs. Wilson said that while she doesn't know the exact figures off hand, it is well over $100. The seven percent tax is charged as well on the admission price to sporting events, though there is a bottom line figure, said Mrs. Fisch er.
