Get ready to change careers in years ahead Continueu from page 19 how our political systems work and how we interact with the rest of the country and the world. Change has always been with us, it’s just that the rate of change is accelerating. Barring a major world disaster and subsequent food shortage to shore up sagging farm incomes, there is a major restructuring taking place in our farm economy and unfortunately, the fallout will be devastating for some individual families. No one has a crystal ball, so we'll end up flying by the seat of our pants, but my prediction is that in 10 years we will have become a tourism, recreational and retirement area, and many of us will have entirely new careers, never thought of when we were in school. There may even be another substantial immigration from the republics of the now crumbling USSR, as well as Third World countries, as we realize that there won't be enough young people to support an increas ingly aging population. ***** And speaking of changing careers, I have just changed mine again (for the fourth or fifth time in four decades), and this will be my last column for The Citizen. I have taken up a position with the Ontario Milk Marketing Board, an independent organization operated by the dairy farmers of Ontario, where I will be doing communica tions and public affairs work. I have found it stimulating and enjoyable writing a column for the many faithful readers who mike this publication possible, and I trust in some small way I've stimulated your thinking as well. Thank you for’your words of criticism and encouragement. LEARN AUCTIONEERING at the Southwestern School of Auctioneering. Next class: March 14-20. Aux. plans for Christmas Members attending the Nov. 25 meeting of the Auxiliary to Wing ham and District Hospital were welcomed by President Mary Lou Cameron. Following the Auxiliary prayer, minutes were read and reports were given. Several business matters were discussed including plans to deco rate the hospital for the holiday sea son. Lights have been purchased and hopefully all the efforts will make a hospital confinement more bearable over the special season. Name tags have been made for Teen Volunteers and many Auxil iary volunteers. Christmas stock ings for babies born during the holiday season are being made. “Smiley Friend” dolls have been made and have been distributed to the Pediatrics ward to help ease a child's trauma in hospital. Future activities include staff treats Dec. 6 with many auxilians baking so the social convenors can thank the staff from the Auxiliary. The auxiliary volunteers will assist at an in-patient Christmas partv on Dec. 23. A major purchase of a Bard pain pump will be made in the near future. The Auxilians closed the meeting by making tray favours for hospital Christmas dinner trays. Letter to The Editor Continued from page 5 animal fixed and you won't have the problem. We have been very fortunate. We have found good homes for all five puppies and they are all doing very well. This time it worked out great but who knows how many times other pups have been left before or will be again. We are saddened to know we live in a community among people who could do such an inhumane thing. The dump is not an animal shelter. Todd and Darlene Wheeler Brussels.
