Brussels Legion begins winter sport activities Menzies’ students The George Menzies Endowment Fund was presented at F.E. Madill Commencement, Friday night to seven former graduates of Brussels Public School, who have gone on to post secondary education. Bottom: Janice Heise, Shawn Jacklin and Andrew McCutcheon. 7 students get Menzies Award For the 21st consecutive year the George Menzies Endowment Fund has provided a substantial cash award to each graduate of the Brus­ sels Public School who has gone directly into post-secondary educa­ tion from high school. Since its inception in 1971, the fund has provided more than $68,000 to 122 Brussels and area Lichty, Demaray families minister through music On Sunday, November 3, the Lichty and Demaray families ministered to the congregation at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Brussels skaters hold fundraiser The Brussels Figure Skating Club will be holding Skate-A-Thon '91 on November 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. Refreshments and snacks will be served during the hourly breaks with hot dogs and cupcakes at noon, followed by the presentation of prizes donated by area business­ es. Whether or not you are a mem­ ber, everyone is welcome to come and participate in support of the club. Information or pledge sheets can be obtained by calling Fran McCall at 887 — 6582. students who qualify. Each year the interest from the fund is divided equally among the applicants. On Friday evening, Bruce Ray­ mond, grandson of the late Mr. Menzies, presented cheques to each of seven students from the Brussels area. The presentation was made during the Commencement Exer­ cises at F.E. Madill Secondary School. through song. Elwin Garland and Tom Warner introduced the plans for forming small groups within the congrega­ tion. Tom based his sermon on Luke 17: 1-10. He used the illustration of a small mustard seed growing to produce a huge plant. Likewise our faith may have small beginnings but has the potential to grow large and powerful with time. The Youth Group is planning a “get away” weekend next week. The Community Venture Club will hold its initial meeting this week. Dawn Engel, daughter of Barry and Diane Engel, Brussels is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program at Fanshawe. Shirley Bridge is the daughter of Harold and Karen Bridge. She is studying Business and Accounting at George Brown College in Toron­ to. Lisa Pennington, is studying Child Care at Ontario Business College. Lisa is the daughter of John and Bonnie Pennington. Jason Gropp is currently at the University of Windsor in the Social Sciences program. He is the son of Mark and Bonnie Gropp. Shawn Jacklin is the son of Wayne and Bonnie Jacklin. He is in a Carpentry Construction Technol­ ogy program at Fanshawe. Andrew McCutcheon is studying Electrical Engineering Technology at Fanshawe. On October 26, the Cribbage team of Gordon Nichol, Les Brewer, Eric Ross and Sandra Josling went to Seaforth to try their luck. Although not qualifying for District finals the team had an enjoyable day. Winning was the team of Gord Haggitt, Bob Hillis, Wayne McDougall and John Stew­ art from the Blyth Branch. Good luck on the next round of play. The Fraternal members of the Branch have started their winter sports program as well. On Satur­ day, October 26, the Legion sent one euchre team to Clinton. This team Finished in first place. The team members were Willis Knight, Ross Nicholson, Ernie Back and Neil Adams. Willis also finished with the most lone hands for the day (seven). The Remembrance Day Service on Monday, November 11 will begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. People wishing to attend are asked to gather at the Cenotaph at 10:30 a.m. The Church service will fol­ low. At 7 p.m. there is a Remem­ brance Day Banquet at the Legion Hall. Tickets are $6.00 each and can be purchased at the Branch. Results of the euchre held Wednesday, October 30 were: high lady, Shirley Hopper; high man, Albert Quipp; low lady, Jean Little; low man, Gordon Nichol; most lone hands for the ladies, Helen Dobson; men, Gordon Jacklin.
