Blyth council briefs Blyth councillors vote to support farmers Blyth village councillors sup ported a resolution from Ashfield township calling for Ontario farm ers to get the same kind of financial support western farmers get at their Oct. 22 meeting. Action on the resolution was deferred from the Oct. 2 meeting of council while councillors did more research. "What it appears the resolution asks for is already in place," Coun cillor Steven Sparling said as he moved to support the resolution. Plans call for Ottawa to pay the first 90 per cent of stabilization and Ontario to top it up with an extra 10 per cent, he said. The figures on which stabilization should be based should be released soon, he said.*** The controversy over burning of cardboard at the G.L. Hubbard Rutabaga plant has been doused at least for the time being, Councillor Sparling said. He said there had been no burning at the plant for three weeks and the company had installed a dumpster and all old cardboard is being thrown into that, he said. Meanwhile complaints have been heating up elsewhere. Coun cillor Sparling said he had been having concerns expressed to him about people burning leaves in the village. "A little bit of civility and courtesy is all we need," he said. "I would not be in favour of a bylaw." A bylaw, he said would be a prob lem to enforce. *** An agreement between the vil lage and the Huron Pioneer Thresh er and Hobby Association is being proposed to cover insurance and maintenance of facilities at the fair grounds. Under the agreement the Association would cover liability during the period of its show and would carry insurance on its build ings at the fairground but at other times, council would have respon sibility for liability and mainte nance at the campground. Council enthusiastically sup ported the idea of a village Christ mas Pageant being organized by Peter Smith, artistic director of the Blyth Festival. "It's a really neat idea," Councillor Sparling said. "It will get some town spirit," Council lor Dave Lee said. The pageant will invite people from throughout the community and local churches to take part.Pro ceeds from the event will be given to Christmas charities. When it was suggested the rental fee on Memo rial Hall might be forgiven for the even Reeve Albert Wasson said he didn’t see why not. Everybody has to get involved, he said. Council approved a recommendation to the Memorial Hall board that rent for the event be forgiven (which even tually mean the village will pick up the tab as part of its annual grant to the facility).*♦* Despite the recession, tax arrears are not as bad in Blyth as might be expected, council was told. "Maybe it says things aren't as bad around here yet," Reeve Was son said. "It's up to everybody to try to keep it that way." Despite the fact present council lors have been unable to attend many meetings, councillors approved payment of a membership in the Goderich and District Cham ber of Commerce. Councillor Spar ling felt the Chamber might be an important body in trying to get a co-ordinated tourism effort in the area although he himself had found it difficult to attend meetings. "Maybe somebody on the new council will be able to attend," Reeve Wasson suggested, though no one would be able to if the vil lage doesn't join. Councillors agreed to pay the membership. Blyth now has one less fire truck. The old No. 2 pumper truck was sold at the county's auction of used equipment Oct. 19 but Helen Grubb, clerk-treasurer, said county officials were disappointed with the $1600 the village received. Offi cials felt that if someone who knew about the truck had bepn there to show it off and prove everything worked, the price could have been doubled, Mrs. Grubb said. The vil lage has been unable to find a buyer for the old truck since it bought a new pumper/tanker truck earlier this year.*** Council approved payment of $3616.60 for moving trees to the fairgrounds and $1260 for purchase of the trees. : With this Coupon Save .50 Off Purchase of 3 - 227 g Pkg. : Beef, Chicken, Turkey Frozen YORK L MEAT PIES :|Special Price With This .50 Coupon Ik 1.49 ■ I Special Price Without Coupon 3/1.99 Expires Sat, Nov. 2, 1991. ■ | Valid Only At Knechtel Assoc.
