Ontario Agriculture Minister Elmer Buchanan says his govern ment is a strong backer of supply management. "I want to assure you lhat this government is committed to preserving the supply manage ment system we have in Ontario, and Canada, and that we fully sup port the strengthening and clarifica tion of Article XI," he said. John Core, chairman of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board, moderated the meeting, and said that supply management fanners are being joined by other commodi ty groups in protecting Article 11 because they know what the losses of that sector will do to Ontario. He said lhat producers must stand firm against an American proposal to change into a tariff the difference between the price of American and Canadian milk. Roy Maxwell from the Chicken Board said that the chicken indus try is based on the family farm, and they have been allowed to charge a fair price to cover the cost of sup plies. "We produce only what (chick ens) Canadians can eat. We've never gone to the government for subsidies. We need more business es like chicken production, not fewer," Maxwell said. "Our system (supply manage ment) is the best in the world and the envy of other farmers through out the world. No deal is better than a bad deal," Maxwell said.
