The work of a Trustee includes
the regular monthly Board meeting,
regular standing committee meet
ings, special committee meetings,
school visits and special events and
graduations. The current remuner
ation for a Trustee is $450 a month.
There is no allowance for extra
meetings but travel expenses asso
ciated with work as a Trustee are
reimbursed. Nomination papers for
the School Board Municipal elec

Andrew, the clerk of Ashfield
Township. Anyone interested in
more information on being a
Trustee for Ashfield, West and East

at 528-2493.
I would like to thank the people
who elected me to represent them
and their children in the important
area of education.

THE EDITOR,
I would like to thank the electors
of Ashfield, West and East
Wawanosh Township for the
opportunity to serve them on the
Huron County School board for the
past nine years. Because of new
commitments I will not be seeking
re-election this year. I've enjoyed
meeting the students, parents and
staff which together form the edu
cation community in our county.
Elected position is both reward
ing and challenging. It is rewarding
because you can work on things
you believe are important to your
community. It is challenging
because there are many competing
views and needs which at limes are
difficult to reconcile.
I enjoyed working for and visit
ing the schools in Huron County
and especially our local schools of
Brookside, East Wawanosh, F. E.
Madill and the Goderich District
Collegiate Institute. Some of the
satisfying things I was able to work
on were the extension of the Family
Studies and Industrial Arts program
to all our elementary schools. The
Huron County Board's support of
energy conservation with the
involvement of its students and
Taxpayers Coalition
plans Wingham meeting
THE EDITOR,
We, The Wingham and Area
Taxpayers' Coalition (W.A.T.C.)
would like to take this opportunity
to introduce ourselves. No doubt
many readers are aware. Tax Coali
tion Ontario Inc. was formed early
this year and now has over 60,000
members belonging to some 60
chapters. The organization was
starred in Blenheim, Ontario by a
small group of taxpayers concerned
about high deficits, the ongoing
huge cost of interest on all public
debt and the lack of accountability
of many government departments
and agencies when spending large
sums of money. W.A.T.C. is part of
this provincial organization.
We are concerned about such
things as:
• Why grant monies must be used
each year or the funds are lost.
Does this not create unnecessary
spending and higher taxes?
• Municipalities having to accept
some "top down" programs from
provincial and federal govern
ments, whether or not our local tax
base can afford them!
• Duplication of services and
equipment provided by various
government and municipal depart
ments where increased sharing of
same would reduce costs.
• Bill 118 was introduced in the
Ontario Legislature on June 5,
1991. Bill 118 contains provisions
that would change the mandate of
Ontario Hydro (from supplier of
Hydro Electricity at cost to the util
ities) to include the funding of
unrelated social policies of the
Ontario government, the cost of
which to be covered by the sale of
power to Municipal Electric Utili
ties. For example, as reported by
the Toronto Star, September 11,
1991, a $250 million expenditure
was forced upon Ontario Hydro in
June to assist Elliot Lake, Ontario
on a Uranium contract deal, as well
as providing financial assistance to
the town itself... one would have to
ask why arc our hydro rates going
up?
We intend to become better
THE EDITOR,
I would like to bring to every
one's attention a very odd and dis
turbing occurrence.
About a month ago the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture sent a let
ter to a friend of mine regarding the
yearly fee (it would be deducted
from his bank account automatical
ly). The person in question hasn't
farmed for 17 years, so not being
interested in belonging to the Fed
eration he went to the bank arid
requested the draft not be put
through. Too late - the bank put it
through (without his signature)
blaming the computer.
Now I am wondering something,
how does he get this little entry in
his bank account corrected? And
since his signature wasn't required,
how much good is a bank account
that anyone can access at any time.
Maybe we would be wiser to keep
our money in a sock and leave the
banks high and dry.
I wonder how many people have
had the same problem with banks,
associations, etc. and how long
does the little man have to put up
with bureaucracy - that costs him
money needlessly.
