Era ends as Callander home closes this week Saying goodbye The staff of Callander Nursing Home gathered on the lawn on Monday for this final picture as a team. The residents and some staff members are moving to Braemare Nursing Home Wingham, when the Brussels home closes Wednesday. An era ended this week as Callander Nursing Home closed, with residents and some staff mem bers moving to Braemare Nursing Home in Wingham. The roots of the beautiful old brick structure that became the home of Callander Nursing Home in 1961 have been traced back to a century earlier when it was regis tered to Thomas Halliday. During the years between 1861 to 1892, it was the residence of 1.1. Hawks, John Brown and John Holmes. In May of that year the house was purchased by David Ross, whose name still remains on th sidewalk leading into the front entrance. David and Maria Ross lived and raised their family there. By 1985, both had passed away. Their daughter Gertrude lived there for two more years. Both she and her sister Luella McLaughlin even tually returned to spend the last years of their life in what was by then a nursing home. Gertrude sold the house in 1958 to Edward and Mary Baker, and it became Baker's Convalescent Home and the couple worked together bathing the residents and doing the cooking and laundry. Mary Stevenson was the registered nurse at the time. The Baker family lived in the back of the second floor tended to the needs of six residents. By 1961 that number had grown to 13. In addition to the Bakers and Mary Stevenson the employees included Lila Goll and Ida Evans, a small staff compared to today's standards. Douglas J. Callander bought the home in March of 1961 and he and his mother, Edna, began expanding the facility immediately. The wings on the north side, upstairs and down, and upstairs on the south side were added to accommodate 34 more residents. Since regula tions were not as strict at that lime the house was quite crowded. Doris McDonald was the registered nurse followed by Marg Krauter. Doug married, and his wife Betty, a registered nurse, was in charge, along with Mrs. Krauter. In 1970, Betty Callander and Mrs. Krauter taught an RNA course, which was offered at the nursing home. The final examina tion was written at Western Univer sity in London. The graduates were Doug Callander, Kitty Rutledge, Isabel Reihl, Fannie Somers and Dawn White. Extendicare was introduced to the home in 1972. Inspection became more frequent and rules stricter. The home was beginning to run more like a hospital. Doug Callan der sold to Austin Nursing Homes Ltd. in 1973. Roger Keay was the administrator, with Ron Forshaw eventually replacing him. The addi tion to the south was built the next year. It didn't accommodate any mre residents but had to meet the LOTTIE MCCUTCHEON A well-known resident of Brus sels passed away peacefully at her home at Callander Nursing Home.
