Golden occasion Brussels residents Bernice and Tom MacFarlane celebrated the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary at an Open House held in their honour at the Brussels Legion on Sunday. The couple were married at the Presbyterian manse on September 20, 1941. MacFarlanes mark 50 years Recent holiday visitors with Jim and Leona Armstrong and family were Ellis and Marjorie McDonald from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Jim, Leona and Leanne Arm strong attended the 50th anniver sary dinner of Jessie and Maurice Laycock at Waterdown, Ontario. Congratulations to the Brussels Agricultural Society on the occa sion of the 130th Fall Fair. The Fair provides an opportunity for those who enjoy crafts, garden ing, flower arranging, preserving, baking and quilting to display their exhibits and their skills. The children's section with the teddy bear bread, the running show flower arrangements and school displays were also of interest. The vegetables, crops, sunflower heads and of course huge pumpkins were very popular. The Opening Night Pet Show and Talent Show, emceed by Rev. Car olyn McAvoy were enjoyed by all those who attended as was the chil dren's tractor pull. The livestock committee was pleased with entries in their section and the sheep, goats, poultry, rab bits, horses and 4H club judges were kept busy until mid-aftemoon. A committee member noted that sending out the catalogue with the issue of The Citizen had increased the number of entries. Brussels is indeed fortunate to have a Fall Fair and a volunteer committee who make it all happen. Our thanks and congratulations as this Fall Fair is another plus for our community. An Open House commemorating the golden anniversary of Thomas and Bernice MacFarlane was held at the Brussels Legion on Septem ber 22, 1991. Family and friends gathered from 1:30 to 4 to pay trib ute to the special pair. Rev. Samuel Kerr married the former Bernice MacFarlane and her groom on September 20, 1941 at the Melville Presbyterian manse. Bridal attendants were Mrs. Samuel Kerr of Brussels and Mrs. J. Cole man, also of Brussels. The groom was the son of James and Margaret MacFarlane and the bride was the daughter of Milton and Fanny Parr. The newlyweds did not take a honeymoon trip as the groom was sent to Kitchener for army duty. He served in the army from July 1941 to October 1945. Upon his return he resumed his occupation as a farmer until August 3, 1973, when he became a full-time employee for C&G Krauter Plumbing and Heat ing. During the years on the farm, Mrs. MacFarlane tended to her family; they have a daughter, Joyce (O’Neill), and helped on the farm. NOTICE TO BRUSSELS RESIDENTS New teacher at BPS On Thursday, September 12, Brussels Public School held a bar becue to raise money for the band and to upgrade the school’s equip ment. Many people showed up to talk to the teachers, eat food, and look around. To find out what parents thought of the barbecue a grafitti board was put up in the hall close to the middle lobby. Many parents thought that the event was worth repeating; it was a good way to meet the teachers, and the food was great! On Friday, September 6, grades 6 to 8 spent their morning at the annual Thresher Reunion in Blyth. This event coincided with our agri culture unit in Science. Mr. Wan- less said that this was the first time he had been on a field trip with a group of kids on the first week of school. We enjoyed seeing the vari ous demonstrations, the steam engines, and the very old farm equipment. Mr. Barrington is a new teacher at Brussels Public. He got this job only one week before school start ed. Even though he teaches music to every grade except kindergarten he still, with much organization, finds time to teach his grade 6 class. His plan for the primary grades is to teach them three basic skills: performing, creating, and lis tening. The senior grades will still be learning instrumental music and playing in the school concerts. Mr. Barrington is thinking about start ing a school choir. Our new teacher at BPS. really enjoys teaching here. RASPBERRIES FALL CROP Pick your own or Ready- picked. Now ready! In the Brussels area For more Information Call: J. & D.
